La Churreria Has Closed; Guess They Weren’t Making Enough Dough

IMG_1340Well, this is a bummer. One of our favorite Spanish spots, La Churreria, has called it a day. Just a month after we got all excited about a menu makeover that brought churro cups into the mix, the three-year-old sister restaurant of neighboring Socarrat has “closed for renovations,” per a Facebook message. But don’t get it twisted, heart-shaped churro fans: the Nolita cafe isn’t coming back. An inquiry reveals the ownership will be “launching a new concept,” with details coming soon.

You can still walk down to Despaña for something close to the Spanish-style sandwiches that La Churreria served. But why did this have to happen when churros were finally going viral?

Yes, it’s National Donut Day, which means dough dealers everywhere are rolling out deals. Dough, for instance, is debuting its new matcha-sugar donut and offering a chance to get a year of free donuts to those who buy a box of six or more. Buy a dozen or more donuts at Moe’s Doughs, in Greenpoint, and you’ll get four free, or you can just get a donut and a coffee for $2. And Dun-Well Doughnuts, in Bushwick, is offering a free donut with purchase of an espresso drink. But forget all that, because churro cups.

Where Valentine’s grub is concerned, I never thought my heart would stray from Doughnut Plant’s rose-petal doughnuts, but these heart-shaped churros really take the cake. And speaking of cake, La Churreria is also offering a churro cake for the V-Day season. Take a look.

Despite construction at the sites of the old Dark Room, El Sombrero, and Motor City, Ludlow Street is looking a little livelier these days: Sweet Chick filled the old Max Fish space in June, the Ludlow Hotel’s Lobby Bar opened last month (with Dirty French coming soon), and now, across the street, 100 Montaditos has opened its second NYC location.

This Spanish Spot Is Serving 100 Types of Mini Sandos (And Orange Cola Sangria!)

We didn’t think Bleecker Street could get any more authentically Spanish than that place that serves chips and salsa before your meal, but on Monday, it shall! Last night we got a sneak peak at the first NYC location of 100 Montaditos, a Spanish fast-casual chain that has 270 restaurants around Europe, Mexico and Colombia. (By sneak peak, we mean we were plied with free mugs of sangria and mini sandwiches.)
