If Girls at Night on the Internet is a pool full of multicolored Jell-O, then the digi-only gallery known as Art Baby, founded by 26-year-old artist and curator Grace Miceli, is the diving board. “Being a girl at night on the internet is where I personally found the confidence to share my work and to create this really supportive community of artists,” explained Miceli, who also curated this show. “For me, it’s an identity and a space I wanted to celebrate. Being a girl at night on the internet is where I met all these artists and, in a very basic way, it’s just a description of where this all comes from. And this show has just been partially about bringing this world that already exists to a broader audience.”

Unless you can survive without sleep or food or your parents have lots and lots of money, it’s tough being an emerging artist in New York these days. Studio spaces are expensive, the fancy gallerists and dealers don’t give a shit about you and neither do their patrons. On the flip side, unless you’re a gazillionare and/or have a formal art education, buying art in New York can be a rather daunting endeavor (the fancy gallerists and dealers don’t give a shit about you either).

Petra Collins and Jeanette Hayes on Girls: ‘I Would Follow Ray’s Soul Patch On Twitter’
Welcome to Girls Talk, in which two of our favorite New Yorkers share the text messages they sent during this week’s episode of Girls.
The text in blue belongs to Lower East Side photographer Petra Collins. Recently, Petra received major press when Instagram took down one of her racy self portraits. Her magazine work has appeared in Rookie, Purple, Vice and Vogue Italia. She has designed clothing for American Apparel, and she’s working on her first book.
The text in white belongs to painter and multi-media artist Jeanette Hayes. Based in Soho, she has shown with Half Gallery, the Hole, Bleecker Street Arts Club, M&B Gallery, and Motelsalieri. Also, Hayes Hayes has made animated GIFs and videos for Proenza Schouler, CHANEL and Opening Ceremony.
