Plywood Up at Soho House, Down at ‘Orchard Street Hell Building’

First up, the Ludlow Street outpost of Soho House, which faced considerable opposition from neighbors when it applied for a liquor license last year, has raised its sidewalk shed, obscuring the facade that had become a magnet for taggers and street artists while the building’s renovation seemed to sit in limbo.

It’s safe to assume that the relationship between Williamsburg residents and Two Trees, the developers responsible for the Domino Sugar factory mega-development, is somewhat fraught. But last night at The Woods, which was uncharacteristically serious, the tension was all too palpable as nearby tenants and homeowners packed the darkened bar to hear updates about the development from Two Trees principal Jed Walentas.

A ‘Handsome and Ornate’ Bushwicker Gets Landmarked

Screen Shot 2014-10-01 at 3.21.29 PMYesterday was a day of major kudos for Bushwick: not only did Blanca earn a couple of Michelin stars but the Doering-Bohack House, at 1090 Greene Avenue, was designated a landmark.

According to the Landmarks Preservation Commission, the 2.5-story wood-frame house was built in 1887, along with many other wood-frame homes, during a Bushwick building boom that followed the construction of the elevated train. It “may be the only remaining frame house that retains its original detailing by the prominent Brooklyn architect Theobald Engelhardt” — the architect responsible for the building that now houses the Wythe Hotel, among many other churches, schools, and homes.
