We warned you that Flying Lotus’s debut feature, Kuso, would be one of the grossest, weirdest movies in recent memory. Sure enough, after last night’s Rooftop Films screening an audience member had just one question for FlyLo.

Why?”

Sleep, Battles
Thursday, June 23, 8 pm at House of Vans: FREE with RSVP
I always devote at least a few minutes of my bike ride home to a scene from Gummo– you know, the fantastically twisted Harmony Korine film starring that kid with the ears. I like to fan out my elbows, toss off my helmet, and fantasize that some people describe me, too, as “downright evil.” But that scene wouldn’t have been the same without the addition of “Dragonaut,” the stoner metal classic from Sleep‘s 1992 album, Holy Mountain.

The great giver of free things, House of Vans, has announced they’re teaming up with Rooftop Films (the latter just dropped their 20th-anniversary summer programming) for two undeniably sick events happening next week. The super group of summertime chill times are calling the almost back-to-back affairs “cinematic music events,” and for the low, low price of $0 you too can see two music-centric documentaries followed by performances from Danny Brown, The Casualties, and more. It’s all happening at House of Vans. Read on for more deets.

Nas and Yeasayer Playing Free Show at House of Vans

VansHOV_BrooklynEvent_Poster_R1The free shows at House of Vans in Greenpoint have always been a Reason to Live in New York, but on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the shoe brand that counts Harmony Korine as a designer is spreading the love with a series of parties ’round the globe. Don’t worry, the Brooklyn installment, on March 16, promises to be one of the better ones. BK’s own Nas (last seen getting into bed with Sweet Chick) will headline above another Brooklyn heavy-hitter, art/psych-pop act Yeasayer. As if that’s not enough bang for your not-even-a-buck, Questlove will be on the decks.

TV Party, Alright! Newness From Public Access TV, Television, Psychic TV, and TV On the Radio

People say we’re living in a golden era of television and that’s apparently true: not only is Television playing a rare (free!) gig at the House of Vans in October (if you failed to RSVP, they’re also doing a Boston date), but the band’s ex-guitarist, Richard Lloyd, is playing Bowery Electric later in the month.

Vans House Party

Summertime is decidedly a time for lounging, but the official season of Leisure Club also means a slew of free events, not least of which are the super-chill Vans House Parties.

Set to play this summer are dance music acts Future IslandsChrome Sparks (both June 19), and Holy Ghost! (August 14), plus the wild men of Black Lips (July 3). And for all the punk/hardcore die-hards, there’s Bouncing Souls and Gorilla Biscuits on July 10. Don’t forget to RSVP for those shows. And make sure to get there early before the free beer runs out and dress accordingly (it gets hot in there).
