There’s a Push to Keep Industry in Brooklyn, But What About Artisanal Tacos?

Restauranteur Dario Wolos, who operates a taqueria from inside a VW bus in Nolita, spoke excitedly earlier this month as he told Brooklyn’s Community Board 1 about plans to bring the taco bus to Bushwick. But then came their response.

“Is there a community need for a restaurant there?” SLA Committee member Tom Burrows asked, with obvious dissatisfaction. Wolos looked confused. “Is it forcing out small industrial businesses?” Burrows continued.  “That’s an industrial business zone. It’s meant for industry.”

Nolita’s Taco Bus Is Coming to Bushwick

Dario Wolos, who opened a taqueria inside a VW bus in a Nolita loft in 2010 after trying it out in Southern Mexico first, now wants to bring the operation to Bushwick. But the taqueria is facing stiff opposition from members of Brooklyn’s Community Board 1, who sharply questioned Wolos Thursday night about whether his taco bus would force out industrial business that might otherwise move into the empty space.
