More About That ‘Small Explosion’ That Left a Man ‘Engulfed in Flames’ On Ave C
It seems a manhole fire is what sent a person on Avenue C to the hospital with serious burns Monday, but the exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear.
A security guard at Village East Towers, the Mitchell-Lama complex at 170 Avenue C, confirmed that two men had been working at a manhole outside of the 21-story towers when one suffered burns “over 40 percent of his body.”
Deirdre Sinnott, who lives across the street, posted a comment on our initial story about the fire and said she heard an “explosion” and “screams which drew me to the window.”

A quick update on those four manholes that caught fire near 176 Maujer Street, where three residences were evacuated due to CO readings. ConEd says the cause of the fires has yet to be determined, but there are no customers without power. And the FDNY says the fire, which broke out shortly before 1:08 p.m., was under control by 2:20 p.m., with no injuries to report.
While trouble came from below in Bushwick, it came from above in Williamsburg.

8 Injured By Possible Explosion and Partial Building Collapse in Chinatown
Eight people are in the hospital after an apparent explosion and building collapse in Chinatown this afternoon.
Shi Zu Lie, a tenant of 17 Pike Street, was in his first-floor apartment when he heard an explosion and a wall fell on him. He managed to crawl out from under the rubble and was eating lunch on the sidewalk when we spoke to him through a translator. “I’m very scared and upset,” he said, his eyes red and scratches and cuts visible on an arm and a leg.

FDNY Cracks Down On Bossa Nova’s Ability to ‘Rave With You Full Throttle’
If you were one of the people who thought, “Ugh, that’s the end of that place” when the Bossa Nova Civic Club got that write-up in The Times last month, well then you’re probably also the type that will say, “See, I told you so,” when you hear that, according to the Bushwick boite’s Facebook page, it got a visit from the FDNY and now must limit capacity at its sweat-drenched dance parties.
