Paris-based contemporary clothing label 13 Bonaparte is bringing its unique collection of apparel to America for the first time. Its pop-up shop opened yesterday, in response to a heightened demand from American customers. This film follows the illustrious but fraught career of Sergei Polunin, aka the “James Dean of the ballet world,” and his progress from child prodigy to a top-dancer wunderkind. I mean, you couldn’t really call anyone the James Dean of interpretive dance, because that would just be a dumb joke. It actually makes sense with Polunin though, as a figure who’s equally as intense, if not more so, than ballet itself, a sport that demands self-torture of its devotees, legit from the very first step.
The New York City Ballet drew a decidedly downtown crowd to Thursday’s performance of The Most Incredible Thing, an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story featuring a score by Bryce Dessner (guitarist for The National) and costumes and sets by cult artist Marcel Dzama. And boy did the NYCB do everything it could to extend a valentine to that crowd: before the latest installment in its Art Series, it was announced that there’d be a surprise after-party with an unlimited flow of free beer and a DJ set by Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem and The Juan Maclean.
