Self-portrait of Elbrecht as a child (from the new 7″).

Jorge Elbrecht’s introduction to the music industry came in the early 2000s with the success of his band/art collective, Lansing-Dreiden, which reissued its entire catalog this past spring. During its heyday, the group received two favorable “Art in Review” write-ups in The Times.

Following Lansing-Dreiden, Elbrecht went on to form Violens and earlier this year joined Ariel Pink’s band as their new guitarist. The Costa Rica-born artist has also become an in-demand producer, most notably making the new Au Revoir Simone record, whose single “Somebody Who” was released in June.

Detail of Portal 2, which will be unveiled on July 13th.

The East Village sure is feeling mystical these days.
Artists Nicolina Johnson and Pérola M. Bonfanti will soon unveil their “13 Portals” — murals based on various forms of astrology and ancient spirituality — on abandoned doorways around the neighborhood, with a kooky communal game to tie them all together.

Is This Rice Twins Book Teaser Even Trippier Than David Lynch’s NIN Video?

Noah and Nathan Rice first started creating collages when they were in high school, and the 35-year-old twin brothers aren’t stopping anytime soon. Their forthcoming book, Cherry Park Lane, explores Quantum Physics and the great myths of Earth through a series of psychedelic collages. Photos such as a girl in various yoga poses are combined with cityscapes and haunting religious imagery to create what the twins describe as a working study. “The more we study, the more it unfolds in our images,” says Nathan. In anticipation of the Rice’s latest volume of work, director William Lazarus Wacker put together a teaser that gives the new Nine Inch Nails video, directed by David Lynch, a run for its money.

Sigh, Amy Poehler Made Fun of Our Name (And a Whole Lot More From DCM)

Sigh, Amy Poehler Made Fun of Our Name (And a Whole Lot More From DCM)
The 56-hour comedy extravaganza known as the Del Close Marathon took place over the weekend. For the improv nerds amongst us, this was the chance to see some of the country’s most talented improv comedians performing at the height of their craft. For the more casual viewer, it was a chance to stalk celebrities, not to mention a whole lot of hey-you-look-familiar faces, running the gamut from Apatow-film-cameo to “that guy from The Office.” Here’s what we took away from it all.
Amy Poehler is busy as hell:

The party is slated to end at 9 p.m. tonight, so get thee over to Market Hotel ASAP.

Todd P : Boyd Rice Show Will Go On Even Though He ‘Sucks As a Human Being’

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 6.36.59 PMTodd P just sent out an epic missive explaining why 285 Kent won’t be among the venues canceling Cold Cave shows due to the addition of controversial opening act Boyd Rice. Patrick says that since Cold Cave added the provocative noise musician to the bill of tomorrow night’s show, 285 Kent has been subject to a “small uproar” involving “multiple oblique threats, several curse-laden late night crank calls, anonymous threatening text messages.”

But even though Rice, per Patrick, is a “washed up 80’s era troll” who “has spent the last 30 or so years saying truly disgusting things – everything from palling around with the KKK to wearing Nazi uniforms to advocating the subjugation of women and the efficacy of rape,” the show must go on in the interest of free speech. There will, however, be “literature at tables set up in the lobby, explaining who Boyd Rice is and what his shameful history entails.” Read the entire letter for yourself — it’s a doozy.
