Times Square Elmo En Español, Comedy For Charity, and More Performance This Week

Imagining the everyday life of someone who dresses up as Elmo and roams around Times Square for tips is entertaining enough, but now you have a chance to see it on stage, in two different languages. Playwright William Burke has teamed up with Modesto Flako Jimenez and the Brooklyn Gypsies Collective for a “Spanish/Spanglish/human” translation of his play FURRY to be performed by Jimenez and Olander “Big O” Wilson. Also, this play isn’t even about the regular life of an Elmo in Times Square, however odd and intriguing that may be. It’s about “a street Elmo who rises to power by taking over the streets of 42nd to 46th Street by using The Art of War.” I don’t think I could imagine the details of such a thing if I tried, so you’re better off checking it out for yourself. Everyone’s favorite (and maybe the only) satirical women’s magazine Reductress, fresh off the release of How To Win At Feminism (check our interview here), gears up for another edition of its monthly live show. Hosted by Reductress associate editor Nicole Silverberg, the show offers chuckles, lady power, and “tips on how to sex good,” duh. But this one’s a little different. The theme is “Hillary Clinton Won.” I’m not sure if this title was decided upon before Tuesday, but either way it’s gonna be a little painful to emerge back into the world once the show concludes. But for one hour of blissful pretending, you can “live your life like Hillary Clinton won with some of our favorite comedians.” Take it while you can. Week in Comedy: Orgies, Dancing and… Murder?

Pasic and Platt: The Orgy
Monday August 29, 8 p.m. at Union Hall: $5
Mo Fry Pasic and Tim Platt are two comedians who have teamed up a few times in the past to disgust, bring dread and even break up. Now, the two are moving their show to Union Hall where they’ll be taking the next logical step and hosting an orgy. Sort of. As the event description explains, they’ll be hosting this show as “a modern couple trying to organize an orgy for, undeniably, the wrong reasons.” It’ll be a show with fewer fast, ridiculous comedy scenes and more slow, serious acting around a ridiculous idea. They’re also joined by a bill packed with other great comedians and actors, including Carmen Christopher, Aaron Jackson, Betsy Kenney and Anna Drezen.

Here’s a little history lesson: Dan (Licata) + Joe (Pera) + Charles (Gould) used to host this stand up showcase on a monthly basis at UCB East, but, apparently, that wasn’t enough for the people. They demanded more and more shows—one young man even self-immolated outside of the Two Boots next to UCB crying “I just want this show to be weekly!” before expiring in a flash of flames.

This Week in Comedy: Minimalism, Horses, and Mumblecore

Sundays With Ana: Maximum Minimalism
Sunday August 7, 8 pm at Over the Eight: FREE 

This long-running monthly show, hosted by Ana Fabrega, has a rotating theme and guest list each month. This time around, the theme is “Maximum Minimalism” or what Fabrega promises will be a show with “no bells or whistles,” just “a simple night of comedy/performance.”

As with most comedy Fabrega does, there’s almost definitely something else there—what it might be, however, is anyone’s guess. The performers for this month’s show include standup Eliza Hurwitz and Nightcap host Ikechukwu Ufomadu.

Celebrate Pride Week With These LGBTQ Comedy Shows

This week, New York City hosts its Pride Week and celebrates the LGBTQ community with events, parties and, of course, the annual pride parade. Celebrating this community seems especially important in the light of the tragic mass shooting at gay Orlando nightclub Pulse. At the same time, after any national tragedy, it’s important to at least occasionally laugh—that way you can be momentarily distracted from the depths of despair and hopelessness. Luckily, there are ways to do both. So, in honor of NYC Pride Week—and to take your mind off how much the world sucks—here are the best LGBTQ-centric comedy shows happening next week.
