Bob Holman Fetes Steve Cannon, Announces a Hiccup in HOWL! Festival

This was already going to be a wistful week for Bob Holman, owner of the Bowery Poetry Club. Tonight and tomorrow, he’s hosting a farewell party for A Gathering of Tribes and its founder Steve Cannon, who are being forced to leave their home of 24 years on East Third Street. On top of that, Holman took to his blog yesterday to make an unexpected announcement: this year’s HOWL! Festival will no longer happen as planned.

East Village Loses a Beloved Gallery: ‘Tribes As a Space Will Be Nonexistent’

A Gathering of the Tribes, which has been fighting for years to keep its East Village gallery and performance space, is finally moving out next week.

Steve Cannon, who has run Tribes out of the second floor of his apartment at 285 East Third Street for the last 20 years, will move around the corner into a much cheaper homestead apartment. From there, he’ll continue to run the Tribes website, literary journal, and Fly By Night publishing arm, with the help of employee Alyssa Devine.

As Landlord Gives It the Boot, Gathering of Tribes Asks For a Leg Up

Steve Cannon, the owner of A Gathering of the Tribes, seems to have finally lost his years-long fight to keep his East Village gallery space. But he isn’t giving up just yet.

In a letter to supporters, the gallery says, “Our landlord Lorraine Zhang has put 285 E. 3rd St. on the market, and is moving to evict Steve Cannon and Tribes on April 15.” According to the letter, the gallery, which has been in the neighborhood for some 24 years, has exhausted all appeals – so it’s looking for someone to buy the historic building, between Avenues C and D, and turn it into a residence for creative types.
