It was around 2 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, when a dozen officers — including a smattering of cops, fire men, and building department officials — found their way into Apostrophe. The police had come by before, but owner Ki Smith, 21, knew this wasn’t one of their “normal trips.”

Apostrophe lies in a patch of Bushwick otherwise punctuated mostly by apartment buildings and bodegas. The precise definition of the space, which draws its name from the Frank Zappa album, varies with time of day. Tonight at 9 p.m. it’ll be a performance venue, as the bands Snow Wite, Nu Depth, and Fluct take the basement stage. On Thursday it’ll be an art gallery, as a recent exhibit of photos, “Villain People,” comes to a close. Usually it’s a living space and occasionally it’s a barber shop.

Welcome to Berry Hill, Where Williamsburg Looks More Like Murray Hill

On the G train to Nassau Avenue, a guy in a backwards baseball cap and a “Most Dope” t-shirt tells his friends, dressed in button-downs and popped collars, that their stop is next.

“I love Brooklyn!” he yells, getting off the train.

Their destination is Berry Park, where on the rooftop strung with Christmas lights there’s a view of the invisible line dividing Williamsburg and Greenpoint.

The night scene around Berry Park doesn’t exactly fit with either of those neighborhoods. In fact, it’s much closer to a certain neighborhood in Manhattan.
