I’m Selfish! The Birth of Venus
Wednesday, October 16 at Dream Baby, 9:30 pm: $10
Drag performer The Great Fairy Venus Celestina’s recurring show at the bar Dream Baby is always named I’m Selfish, but this time the title feels even more justified, as it will be celebrating the literal birth of Venus herself. Join the birthday queen, members of her Haus, and other special guest performers who will be turning out “Venus-themed” numbers for all to see. The cast will be performing a whopping three sets, so there will be plenty of time to see, tip, and drink, including some chances to win free booze.
Thursday, October 17 at Mad Tropical, 7 pm: FREE
There are a lot of things out there that might make someone feel stoked. Free stuff is certainly high up there on anyone’s list, regardless of your financial situation. Monthly comedy show Stoked at Bushwick bar Mad Tropical (formerly Tandem, for those who were around back then) is one such free thing, and the combination of costless and hilarious will surely have anyone feeling, well, stoked. This spooky edition of the show features not only free pizza but sets by Wanda Noonan, Rufat Agayev, Harris Alderman, and Julio Diaz, plus tunes by DJ Melton, hosting by Amber Rollo, Kelly Bachman, Davidson Boswell, and Julie Piñero, and maybe your chance for the spotlight, as there’s an open mic before the show starts.
Friday, October 18 at Pete’s Candy Store, 7 pm: FREE (donations suggested for Immigration Equality)
Let’s be honest, storytelling shows can be hit or miss. Sometimes they’re gripping and gut-bustlingly funny, but sometimes it feels like you’ve been locked in a room with someone who simply won’t stop talking about themselves. Kweendom, a queer comedic storytelling show hosted by Bobby Hankinson, is one of the shows out there that feels more like the former than the latter, all while spotlighting queer performers and raising money for worthy causes. (Lately, they’ve been collecting donations for Immigration Equality, which provides legal aid and advocacy for LGBTQ immigrants.) Friday’s show features Gabe Gonzalez, Carolyn Bergier, Magda Chychowski, Jamie Brickhouse, and Justin Covington.
Saturday, October 19 at Venus in Furs, 8 pm: $10 suggested donation
October is a far cry away from the warmer days of Pride month, but it has similar energy, encouraging unabashed witchiness and elaborate costumes, which one might say isn’t so different from the queerness of drag. Saturday night, new Bushwick/Bed-Stuy bar Venus in Furs is presenting the joyously-named Ecstatic Cling, a truly jam-packed night of drag, burlesque, and other performance surprises, some of which will surely be spooky. Produced by Shella Malaprop, a prolific fixture of the Bushwick scene and recent Mx. Nobody finalist, the show will welcome around 15 performers to strut their stuff on the stage. A show that stacked might require a bit of stamina, but the bar serves food til 3 am, so you should be set.
