If you’re a fan of animal rights or Lena Dunham, Gristle Tattoo has a deal for you. Starting today, the Williamsburg shop is hosting a six-day fundraiser for Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue. Fifty percent of funds raised from the vegan ink tats will go toward the New Jersey non-profit’s activities, which recently included saving a cow that escaped from a Queens slaughterhouse.
If you’re wondering how the creator of Girls factors in, it’s because one of the farm-animal-inspired designs reminds us of Ferdinand the Bull, a children’s storybook character that Dunham happens to have etched on her upper arm.
According to the designer, Ligia Albarran, the resemblance is “purely coincidental.”
“It was just like a random photo of a cow that I thought was really pretty so I kind of was inspired by it,” she told us.
Albarran also designed a cow/pig combo, a peep of chicks, and a sheep and rooster for the fundraiser, all of which have been booked. In fact, she’s completely booked for this week, but will accommodate additional bookings as needed.
Gristle’s resident sacred geometrical illustrator Jack Poohvis is also participating in the flash fundraiser and still had a few appointments open when we last spoke to him.
