There’s always something fun going on at Greenpoint beer bar The Diamond (you’ll recall their staring contest, mutt show, and David Lee Roth tribute, among others), but last week’s Chili Cookoff was really cool beans.
On Wednesday, chili challengers arrived with crockpots in hand to try and take home some prize money. Patrons, for five bucks a pop, voted on which chili deserved to reign supreme.
Competitor Joseph Badger, who lives around the corner and partners with The Diamond for El Jefe’s Nachoria pop-ups, brought a spin on his classic nacho recipe.
Another Greenpoint local, Dean Haddock, made a lentil, meat-filled chili. That went up against a “green machine” chili, a pulled pork chili, and a chili from the people at Duke’s Liquor Box. The Greenpoint craft liquor store, Duke’s, won with a near majority, 14, of the 34 votes.
If you missed the cook-off, don’t worry– the El Jefe pop-up dishes out the heat the first Friday of every month. Pollack also said to keep an eye out for announcements on The Diamond’s social media about Valentine’s Day. His plans are still in the works, but they may involve the two-person gondola in the bar’s backyard.
