A blaze broke out this afternoon at an idyllic East Village penthouse that was called the “ultimate NYC home” after it recently hit the market at $4.4 million.
The fire broke out around 3:40 p.m., scorching the cottage-like structure on the roof of 203 East 13th Street. It was brought under control within an hour, according to a FDNY spokesperson who said there were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
The rustic three-bedroom apartment with wood-burning fireplace and outdoor terrace was up for sale in June and was in contract just 19 days later, per Curbed. The degree to which the actual living quarters were damaged is unclear. According to a resident, the structure where the blaze erupted housed the building’s “water and top of the elevator shaft.”
