You’ll have to wait till Friday to see the painting of Donald Duck with his head sliced open and an egg frying on his brain: that’s when Nychos’s show “Silly Slicesophy” opens at Mighty Tanaka in DUMBO. In the meantime, the Austrian artist is spending his time in New York painting a mural on the side of Tutu’s in Bushwick.
Nychos did a mural for Bushwick Collective last year; today, he was thrilled to see even more street art around the neighborhood. “It’s the only place where you can do this kind of thing,” he said of Bushwick. “This architecture, all the old warehouses, all the wall space. When you add color, it looks good.”
So far, the Tutu’s mural depicts an orca with its insides wide open and its intestines and skeleton on display, which is one of Nycho’s regular themes. He plans to add plastic and trash, and “maybe a [rubber] duck” falling out of the orca’s fragmented body. Perhaps as an environmental critique?
“Probably,” said Nychos. “I think about that stuff, but people should make their own story when they look at what I do. Sometimes reactions are funny, if people think it’s gross and morbid. But I don’t see it that way.”
Nychos started spray painting yesterday afternoon, and plans on completing his mural before the end of today. Tutu’s is tweeting his progress.
