In April we shared the sad news that The Water Table’s boat, the Revolution, was hit by a large tugboat, forcing them to postpone their scheduled dinner cruises. Since then, there have been even more setbacks.

Hot diggity dog, there’s a meme and a latte for everything.
There’s no shortage of black nerds a.k.a. blerds and there’s a bunch of black writers, actors, and artists, but there’s definitely a lack of representation in popular nerd culture–it’s been 19 years since Marvel has made a new film with a black protagonist–and in conventions. That’s where Clairesa Clay and Blerd City Con come in.
Today is a sad day. Not because the long weekend has ended, which rightfully warrants a tear or two, but because the parking party is over in the East Village.
Pete’s Mini Zine Fest is coming to Williamsburg next Saturday and there will be some interesting zines up for grabs including Fracking Can Be Fun and Homos in Herstory. Bill Roundy will also be there selling Bar Scrawl, his Brooklyn bar review guides. These aren’t the kind of reviews you’d read in Frommer’s or on TripAdvisor. They’re cartoon guides with some different takes on places you’ve probably been before or have been wanting to check out.
Smoke rose above the Village this evening as a 5-alarm fire broke out near Astor Place.
Around 5:45pm, firefighters were seen breaking through the windows of the six-story co-op building at 60 East 9th Street, near Broadway.
The East Village is getting another trendy dessert spot this weekend. This time it’s in the form of egg waffles topped with ice cream and a ton of fixings. Looks like Wowfulls might have some competition.
Eggloo is opening a new shop for the popular Hong Kong dessert on Avenue A right across from Tompkins Square Park– its second location in the city after a Chinatown one opened last February.
Those who make it out to the grand opening on Saturday and Sunday will be treated to a buy-one-get-one-free deal on all waffle cones and their new make-your-own ice cream sandwiches. As an added bonus, Eggloo will be debuting some new cookie, soft serve and drizzle flavors.
The new cookies are chocolate chip, chocolate black sesame, ube coconut and matcha white chocolate.
Peace and quiet is hard to come by in New York City. Even trying to zen out in a yoga class can prove quite difficult with all the sirens, shouting and nondescript music perpetually playing in the background. On the other hand, leaving the island will cost you. You can rent a mini cabin in a mystery location for $165 per night, or you can take the A train down to the Rockaways for a free, all-inclusive meditation retreat.
Who needs a screening of Jaws on the water when you can see a real, live shark in Rockaway Beach?
No, it’s not a great white, but Instagram user Dylan Sirgiovanni spotted this sizeable, bug-eyed fish, which looks like a dusky shark, at 136th Street. He said he saw it on Tuesday evening and after snapping a picture, he did what any person with a healthy disregard for their hands would do – helped it back into the water.
Today is the official start of summer and what better way to celebrate than getting excited for outdoor movie season. Williamsburg’s SummerScreen just released some colorful and spacey iterations of movie posters to go along with this year’s series, which kicks off July 5. Seven local artists created the posters for each film that will show in McCarren Park: Mean Girls, Office Space, Donnie Darko, Selena, I Know What You Did Last Summer and an audience choice. So fetch.
Another one bites the hardshell tortilla dust. East Village favorite San Loco is set to close tonight. After 3 a.m., there will only be one location left in Manhattan, on the Lower East Side.
