Hank Wood & the Hammer Heads, La Misma, Mommy, Conspiracy, Shimmer, Fur Helmet Friday May 5, 8 pm at Saint Vitus: $15
This lineup reads like a who’s-doo of Toxic State records. Arriving straight from the “institutional abyss” is Mommy. Then you have the Portuguese spittlin’ piss punks ofLa Misma, and scene stalwarts likeFur Helmet and Conspiracy. I mean, Saint Vitus has been called “one of the best-booked bars in New York”– even so, you’re rarely gonna find so many excellent punk/hardcore bands in one place outside of a funeral or, like, a festival (shudder).
Now I have you with me, under my power. Our love grows stronger now with every hour. Look into my eyes, you’ll see who I am. My name is Lucifer, please take my hand. – Black Sabbath
Yesterday eve, a hoard of leather-jacket-clad girls with flowing manes and practiced scowl-pouts made their way to their assigned seats at Saint Vitus. The mood was heavy, everyone seemed to know that they faced the potential for both complete humiliation and romantic glory at the very first Speed Metal Dating. I was among the 74 people who showed up, a sacrificial lamb for stunt journalism.
Rest assured, Todd Patrick is doing more than just firing off e-mails this evening. As an aperitif to the imminent re-opening of the Market Hotel, he has organized a complete retrospective of Showpaper, the bi-weekly publication he founded in 2007 that immediately became the go-to source for every DIY all-ages show in New York City and the tri-state area. More than 160 issues will adorn the walls at the renovated Market Hotel, and most of them will be available to take home. The party is slated to end at 9 p.m. tonight, so get thee over to Market Hotel ASAP.
If you miss it, sorry for the late notice — but don’t worry: there’s a solid slate of shows in our nabes over the next week. For more complete listings, see the B+B calendar, or check out some highlights below. More →
