For 401 Days, J. Views ‘Opened Up a Window’ on His Creative Process

As the cliché goes, a talented artist can make their work look easy. Most successful works of art, then– anything from albums to paintings and photographs–  belie the huge amount of effort and skill that went into their creation. This might stem from the idea that showing too much of the maker’s hand demystifies the process, and therefore risks ruining the magic of art. That distance is especially important when it comes to music– for most genres anyway, maintaining a separation between the audience and the performer, both physical and psychologically, is an essential part of the experience.

B+B Premiere: Dig This TAOTSS Video For "Bare Bones," Before their Album Drops at the Gutter


The first email I received about the new video for The Adventures of the Silver Spaceman (TAOTSS) from frontman Zachary James Ellis said something about a “yurt” with no cell service. When I caught up with Ellis via phone, he told me he was on a retreat, writing songs in Paonia, in western Colorado. With the Rockefeller tree about to be lit, tourist crowds reaching saturation levels, the L train acting like a jilted lover, and a drizzle erasing what few hours of daylight exist at this longitude, we could all be a little jealous.

Watch Lane Moore Channel John Waters in the Video For ‘Philadelphia’

It turns out Lane Moore isn’t just the host of comedy show Tinder LIVE! and the sex and relationships editor at Cosmopolitan.com — she’s also been a songwriter and musician since she was well under five feet tall. In 2009 (when she was a bit taller), she came up with the band name It Was Romance and then went on a hunt for the perfect bandmates. Together they’ve been creating music that Lane describes as “the Black Keys meets Fiona Apple meets 1960s girl groups, with some Yeah Yeah Yeahs in there.” If you’re curious to hear what that sounds like, check out the new video for the song “Philadelphia,” off the band’s self-titled debut album.
