Olek is the prolific crochet artist known best for disrupting public spaces by swathing dull stone, concrete, and brick with enormous, sometimes intricate yarn hoods. While she’s spent the last 15 years living in Brooklyn, her reach as an international artist seems to be expanding ever outward from the city where she started her art career.

Last night, Supermans, Batmans, and many Gothamites in sequined capes filled Capitale for The Moth’s superhero-themed gala. In its fourteenth year, The Moth Ball celebrated storytellers like honoree Louis C.K.
“Doesn’t every day celebrate Brooklyn artists?” joked Manhattan-based artist John Gordon Gould at yesterday evening’s Brooklyn Artist Ball. Be that as it may, the decadent event truly put Brooklyn artists front and center (those that were invited, anyway), showcasing their works as table displays and decorations at the Brooklyn Museum.

This past weekend, North 6th Street exploded with energy as more than 20 artists chosen by Absolut’s Open Canvas Initiative transformed a Williamsburg block of storefronts, construction fences and bare walls into colorful, stunning murals. Prompted to “Transform Today,” the artists, who were mostly from the Brooklyn area, worked with a wide variety of materials and mediums — starting with yarn.
