“It’s cold. It’s a protest, it’s them marching in,” said Adrian Van Der Plas as he looked at an oil painting hanging in his Lower East Side gallery. “There’s some fire, some smoke. They’re here to scorch the opposition with shear manpower and guns.”

“Ferguson,” by Vincent Zambrano, depicts police force in the wake of Michael Brown’s death, and a tension that has flared back up in recent days as the St. Louis suburb marks the anniversary of the shooting.

Photos: May Day March Calls For Workers Rights and End to Police Brutality

An estimated 1,000 protesters rallied in Union Square Friday afternoon for a May Day rally for worker and immigrant rights. People gathered in support of issues from raising the minimum wage to fair and equal pay for women, but this year May Day meant a lot more to many people-with the death of Freddie Gray, the subsequent violent protests in Baltimore, Maryland, and the indictment today of six police officers in connection to Gray’s death, racism among the police was one of the main messages, if not the most prevalent issue, taken up by the protesters.

Rift Among Socialists Over Former Presidential Hopeful’s ‘Potentially Racist’ Comments About Michael Brown

East Village pacifist David McReynolds has been arrested at least 15 times in pursuit of his varied causes, once for organizing and leading a 1967 sit-in during the Vietnam war at the downtown Whitehall Military induction center. Arrested with him were leftwing luminaries like Allen Ginsberg, Grace Paley and Dr. Benjamin Spock.

McReynolds, who was on the editorial board of the now defunct Liberation magazine, was arrested two years earlier for burning his draft card in Union Square. Along the way, he visited Hanoi before the fall of Saigon to the communist North Vietnamese — or, as he would put it, “the liberation of Saigon” that occurred just before May Day 40 years ago.

Video: New Yorkers Gather For Some Real Talk About Ferguson

Last night, after it was announced that Darren Wilson wouldn’t face charges in the killing of Michael Brown, outraged New Yorkers marched through the city’s streets. Today, it was time to sit down and talk. This afternoon, NYU Student Diversity hosted a forum at the school’s Kimmel Center that allowed community members to do just that. Play our video to hear raw reactions from a former Ferguson-Florissant resident and others who’ve been touched by the events of the last few months and beyond.
