Peace and quiet is hard to come by in New York City. Even trying to zen out in a yoga class can prove quite difficult with all the sirens, shouting and nondescript music perpetually playing in the background. On the other hand, leaving the island will cost you. You can rent a mini cabin in a mystery location for $165 per night, or you can take the A train down to the Rockaways for a free, all-inclusive meditation retreat.
Williamsburg’s newest yoga studio wants to bring out the goddess in you. When Devi Yoga Studio opens Nov. 11, it’ll offer “divine feminine yoga” classes, among others.
Bridget Vizoso, a veteran floral stylist and the creative director at the Williamsburg-based Designers’ Co-op, has been practicing yoga for 18 years, having started at Jivamukti when it was a walk-up studio in the East Village. She recently graduated from Kelly Morris’s Conquering Lion program and has now brought Morris over to her new studio for 300-hour teacher trainings.
My period was already a day late when I signed up for the naked meditation. Class was scheduled for Saturday — five days away. On Thursday, I began to spot. I went to the website for the Young Naturists and Nudists America to see what the organizers of the event suggested: a Diva Cup, a silicone-based container purported to be more discrete than a tampon. Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but the list of items I feel comfortable putting inside of my body is not very long, and something with the word “Diva” in the title is certainly not on it. The website also condoned underwear, but (no pun intended!) I didn’t want to half-ass the experience, so I decided to just tough it out with a tampon.
