When America is faced with what seems to be an endless stream of police brutality, discrimination, and gentrification toward black and brown individuals, sharing an article for the fifth time can start to feel fruitless. Those of us who continue to see this kind of gut-wrenching news on our social media feeds can start to wonder what exactly we can do to help.
Anti-mass incarceration activist Fury Young and his team are planning a cross-country road-trip, in order to begin production on a concept album that will give formerly and currently incarcerated persons a voice. They’ll be stopping off at prisons to make recordings of musically-minded prisoners, and meeting formerly incarcerated correspondents to record with them as well. They’ll also be spreading awareness of America’s insanely over-saturated prison system along the way. To fund-raise for said trip, Fury’s holding a pop-up art show (including his work and that of several formerly and currently incarcerated persons) in one of New York’s most beautiful public gardens.

The folks behind the Lowline are in high spirits: a benefit at the Bowery Hotel on Monday night attracted 500 guests (including celebrity supporter Adrian Grenier) and raked in about $30,000. The money will go towards funding the next phase of technology and design research, according to Robyn Shapiro, the project’s Director of Community.
