Ginger Mama Is Back, and This Time She’s Occupying A Documentary

After running into Ellen Turrietta earlier this month, we left the encounter feeling confused, but still curious about the Ginger Mama. Was her streetside “barber shop” and  “leather shop” performance art, or was it simply a case of decadence gone awry? Who could tell.

How Ginger Mama ‘Stopped Being a Brat’ and Started Fire-Grooming in the Street

A fire-haired woman named Ellen Turrietta (a.k.a. Ginger Mama) has outlined something of an occupation corridor on East Seventh Street and Second Avenue in the East Village, turning a strip of sidewalk outside of her former apartment first into a free barbershop and then into a “leather shop” consisting of dog collars, filthy garments, and a skeleton bodysuit complete with inflatable boner.
