Deep pockets don’t impress Shannon Walker and Tony Castle, two of the directors of the upcoming LES Film Festival (and co-workers at Noho production company BFD Productions). “We like to showcase people who innovate with things other than money,” says Castle. “You know, there’s something endearing about watching a film where you can understand how they put it all together, in a really imaginative way.” Music to the ears of struggling filmmakers everywhere.

‘There’s Beautiful Light’: Meryl Meisler’s Snapshots of Disco-Era Bushwick

The ’70s were a wild time to be in Bushwick: following a major blackout in 1977, shops and homes were devastated in a wave of riots and looting. Meryl Meisler began teaching art at a public school there in 1981 and spent her early adulthood capturing both the hedonistic disco scene of Manhattan and the bombed-out streets of de-industrializing North Brooklyn. The native New Yorker’s snapshots, taken during the height of the city’s crack epidemic, will go on display Friday as part of Bushwick Open Studios.

First Look at The Black Ant, Now Serving Insect-Dusted Margs and Guac

The Black Ant, opening tonight in the East Village, doesn’t look much like any other Mexican restaurant in town, and that’s the way the owner likes it. “Our inspiration is Salvador Dali and Buñuel,” explains Jorge Guzman, who is Dominican but has spent time in Mexico. “All Mexican restaurants go with the same old ideas — it’s what they know. But we wanted something different. And you know, Mexico is so surreal.”

For a Group Show Titled ‘POLISH,’ This Photographer Got Raw [NSFW]
