Beginning today and running through October 10, the One Art Space gallery in Tribeca will be holding an exhibit titled Attack the Block – “a concise survey of contemporary street art in America.” With many of the featured artists having already had their work exhibited in museums and galleries like MoMA, the Whitney and the Brooklyn Museum, the show is what Daniel Giella, owner of One Art Space, describes as an “all-star game” of the street art world. But is the show also an oxymoron?

Almost exactly five years ago Todd Chandler was floating atop a garbage heap in the Adriatic Sea bound for a party he had not been invited to, the Venice Biennale. A crew of about 30 artists, freegans, anarchists, bike punks and the like were at the helm of the rafts which made up a fleet of buoyant recycled materials.

The preview of the Whitney Biennial was great and all. But did those uptown swells lay out endless garbage cans filled with free PBR at THEIR opening? Did they toss out free t-shirts to a rowdy, adoring crowd? Was there Ministry on the decks and naked people on the floor? And were there almost 600 different artists with works hung literally floor to ceiling, every square foot filled, every single one of them created by a woman?
