An Evening with M Lamar: Performance + Q&A With Tucker Culbertson at Cooper Union

M Lamar is a singular performer to say the least. The visual-artist-turned-opera-composer (who also happens to be Laverne Cox’s twin brother) writes and performs his own unique blend of blues, black metal, and classical music-influenced operas that grapple with the black experience in America. Radical, queer, and ever the intense performer, M Lamar brings his place in a violent, unjust historical continuum to bear on the politics of now. This performance of bits of Lamar’s “most poignant material” is free and open to the public and will be followed by a discussion with Tucker Culbertson, a queer theory and law professor at Cooper Union.

If you’re an experimental music fan, or even just someone who likes to dabble in the unexpected once in a while, this weekend show is an absolute must-see. With its stellar lineup of (mostly) female-fronted noise projects, you’ll have the #blessed opportunity to experience performances by some true vets of avant-garde sounds. Originally from Detroit, Pod Blotz (aka Suzy Poling, who works as a visual artist too) has landed in much-sunnier LA, but that doesn’t mean her music has lightened up in the least. With Pod Blotz, Poling continues her devotion to dark electronics and carrying out tripped-out visual stunts at live performances (the latter looks something like this).

New York Fringe Fest 2014

It’s that time again, folks. The time when the world’s most avant-garde and experimental theater types descend on the East Village and Lower East Side for a fortnight of moderately insane adventure know as the Fringe Festival. The 18th edition of the Fest will be deluging the metropolis with playful peculiarities from August 8 to 24. Highlights include The Mormon Bird Play, Fatty Fatty No Friends, Fuck You! You Fucking Perv! and much, much more.
