Watch the Oscars at One of These 13 Spots and You’ll Be Golden

1926908_10152255670215930_215930380_nAt last year’s Oscars, Seth MacFarlane hosted, Jennifer Lawrence tripped, and Ben Affleck called his marriage to Jennifer Garner “work.” Movie musicals and James Bond were celebrated, because nobody — except 40 million viewers — wants a short ceremony, and the producers had to bookend some very expensive commercial time.

This weekend, we found a smattering of places where you can share eye rolls (it’s the 75th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz and the theme of the night is “heroes”) or memorial toasts (Roger Ebert, James Gandolfini, Paul Walker, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Harold Ramis).

Coney Island Film Fest and The Legacy and Lessons of Bleecker Bob’s

This Friday through Sunday, the Coney Island Film Festival celebrates its 13th year with 88 films, some food, some wine, and, of course, some burlesque. Programs include “Coney Island Films,” which are films based in or about Coney Island; “The Jules Verne Project,” a story about a shipwreck and survival; and of course “The Warriors,” which needs no explanation.

Celebrate Independence Day With Some Indie Flicks — Or Not!

These upcoming screenings have us Reel Psyched.

The year 2000 marked the first time Brits elected a Mayor of London (not to be confused with the Lord Mayor of the City of London). In the running was Malcolm McLaren, best known as the manager and oft-disputed mastermind behind the Sex Pistols (he also managed the New York Dolls, Bow Wow Wow, had a solo career, and was on a couple of reality shows).
In “Malcolm McLaren: Not For Sale” — featured in Wednesday’s “New Filmmakers: Films About Music” program at Anthology –Nancy Cohen and Andy Lee attempt to track down and interview McLaren about his run for mayor. He misses a few meetings with the film crew but they catch up with him eventually.
