Checking Out the Coney Art Walls As They Near Completion

IMG_5453
While Bushwick Collective has been hogging all the attention lately (even from local cops), a series of equally impressive murals have been going up these past few weeks in Coney Island, where the New York art world’s prodigal son Jeffrey Deitch has called on some big names to paint a couple dozen walls dotting a concrete lot shared with Coney Smorgasburg.

So many good things are coming back in April: tonight there’s Louie, Sunday there’s Silicon Valley and — oh yeah, IRL — there’s the Hester Street Fair. The outdoor food-and-fashion bonanza returns to the corner of Hester and Essex Streets on April 25 and they’ve given us the early word on new vendors. This year the fair will be Saturdays only, but to make up for the loss of Sundays they’re promising “a rotation of almost all new food vendors with more spots added to create a Hester Food Court.” Oh, and there’ll be TBA nighttime events, too.

Judd Apatow and a Disconcertingly Clean-Shaven Louis CK Have Been Dropping into the Comedy Cellar

(Photo: Daniel Maurer)

(Photo: Daniel Maurer)

Some weeks ago we heard that funnyman-turned-filmmaker Judd Apatow had been returning to his roots and doing surprise standup sets at the Comedy Cellar. And apparently he’s for real: we spotted him outside of the venue last night, having just dropped in for a set (seems Aziz Ansari also paid a surprise visit). And according to the Twittersphere, he’s appeared there at least nine times since May.

Smorgasburg

Every week, rabid foodies bounce from stall to stall at this cornucopia of food vendors, each with their own gimmick. There tend to be lines at the trendy vendor of the moment (Mighty Quinn’s, Ramen Burger) but with 100 vendors in play, there’s no way to leave hungry. In fact, Mario Batali has called this Brooklyn Flea offshoot “the single greatest thing I’ve ever seen gastronomically in New York City.”
