Welcome back to IRL. Here’s to hoping you had a good one being equal parts proud to live in a country where you don’t have to think too hard about what went into your readily available Apple phone and palm oil snacks, and all “pshhh” about the whole affair. We’re also fingers-crossed that you didn’t go too DIY on fireworks after a failed reconnaissance mission ‘cross the Pennsylvania border (really, you gotta know a guy to get anything close to decent fireworks ’round these parts)– because fingers and toes are maybe more valuable than even the most awe-inducing homemade mortar blast or Roman candle to your unsuspecting friend’s face. In the interest of such things, maybe you didn’t get your kicks, but fear not, there are better, much safer ways to get your thrills via rock n’ roll. Take this week to scoot your butt to some shows and allow yourself to revel. Believe us, it’ll make up at least a little bit for this increasingly less-explosive holiday.

Shows: Psych Guitar God Holds Court All Month, Noise Queen Goes Soft Serve
Don’t judge us for this, but we’re kind of still recovering from New York’s Alright. Having engaged in more than our fair share of jostling and mayhem, we’re taking this week to mend our bruises and douse our wounds in extra-strength liquor. R&R calls for a brief break from sonic masochism so this week we’re feeling dancey stuff, psych, and dare we say even a little bit of pop. Thankfully lineups around town reflect this inclination, take advantage of it while you can.
Week in Live Music: Last Punk Bits Before the Big Fest and Thank Heavens For Indie That’s… Different
Welcome to another end of the work week. You’re probably busy eyes-locked on the clock counting down the seconds until you can sprint out the door, straight into the nearest bodega, and pop the cap off your brown bag to bliss. Too busy to look for what the hell you’re gonna do with your ears tonight. Lucky for you we have a few stellar options lined up for tonight and beyond. We have a tiny dose of punk for you, but we’re holding the Big Gulp until next week, so get ready. In the meantime, step outside of the only genre that matters for a few minutes and you know, expand your mind.
4 Must-Go Shows, One at a Secret Locale and Another at David Blaine’s Steakhouse
Making a weekend show list was insanely easy this time around because there are an outrageous number of amazing happenings stuffed into a tiny slice of time, so choose wisely guys. Take your pick from surprises, standbys, newish venus, and secret locations. Believe it or not, it’s all happening within the next 48 hours.
Speaking of believing, you should probably, definitely hit David Blaine’s The Steakhouse– a newish DIY spot in where else? Bushwick. We’ve been in touch with the management over there and after this weekend will hopefully have a better idea of what kind of magic tricks we’re dealing with and whether or not this spot will reign as Bushwick’s most exciting steak dining destination. They’ve got a great deal of stiff competition.
CBGB? CMJ? OMG! Your Guide to The Acronym Invasion
In the coming weeks a flurry of acronyms approacheth the city as CMJ and the CBGB music festival make landfall. Both apparently used to stand for something cool. It’s safe to open your ears now, because we promise our picks have developed a special antibody rendering them resistant to a case of the lames which develops in conjunction with Apple collaborations and/or the advanced stage of Music Industrial Complex infection.
