It looks like Antler Beer & Wine Dispensary is coming along nicely. The wine bar bound for 123 Allen Street is owned by Scott Garry and James Hendrick, who also owns Gramercy boozeries Bull’s Head Tavern and Tap Room No. 307. According to The Lo-Down, Community Board 3 voted to support their wine and beer license last week after Hendrick promised “a nice warm space for people to come after work where there’s positive energy.”
We haven’t been able to get the owners of Antler on the proverbial horn, but we did manage to nab a shot of the charmingly rustic interior, which looks well on its way to completion. More →
The concept is kind of irresistible: a free dinner followed by a slideshow of local artwork. TheSlideluck Potshow [the former Slideluck Potshow has rebranded as just Slideluck] began in photographer Casey Kelbaugh’s backyard in Seattle in 2000, expanded to Amsterdam, Nairobi, Bogota and beyond, and it’s coming to Bushwick this Thursday. This year, it’ll feature the work of 25 Bushwick and East Williamsburg-based artists (their names are below), one of which will be selected for a solo show at the Living Gallery in October. Less than a month after a “freak electrical fire” cleared Alaska and forced it to close, the Bushwick bar is back on its feet. It’s apparently been too long since a middle-aged Manhattanite went on safari in Brooklyn, so none other than Vogue has gone and published “A Distant Shore,” in which Jeffrey Steingarten “table-hops around New York’s most talked-about borough.” Oh, boy.
If the name Steingarten sounds familiar it’s not because you’re thinking of Soundgarden — it’s because a few years ago, Vogue’s restaurant critic touched off a small shitstorm among foodie types when he told Grub Street about the “dangers of Brooklyn boosterism,” recalling the time his Brooklyn-proud assistant brought him a croissant from some bakery she liked over there and he found it “only acceptable” compared to the great croissanteries of Manhattan (you know, like, Au Bon Pain). The insanely popular Wafels & Dinges truck opened its first brick-and-mortar location this morning at 2nd Street and Avenue B, and owner Thomas DeGeest hopes it’ll function primarily as a neighborhood coffee shop. More →

Last week, the unthinkable happened: Enid’s went dry. The Greenpoint bar’s liquor license expired and it went a week without being able to serve (yesterday it announced on Facebook: “booze is back!”). This was particularly a blow to Charles Bellafiore, who’s been a regular at Enid’s since it opened just before the turn of the century – which is a much cooler way of saying 1999. More →
