Meet Your North Brooklyn Democratic District Leader (Behind the Bar at 151)

If you don’t know who the North Brooklyn Democratic District Leader is at this point, well, then you probably haven’t attended too many Community Board 1 meetings, and it’s also safe to say that you’re definitely not a member of the Brooklyn Young Democrats. But if you live in or around Greenpoint or Williamsburg and care to be involved in the future of the Democratic Party or the Progressive movement, rest assured there are easier ways to get to know Nick Rizzo than crashing a tedious land-use committee hearing.

For one, you could always convene with Rizzo on the Lower East Side, where you’ll find him working behind the bar at 151. It was clearly a slow night when I stopped by last week (he’d just finished doing the glamorous work of juicing some oranges), so Rizzo had some time to chat about Bernie Sanders, Elena Ferrante, and a rather awkward encounter at Vito Lopez’s wake, among other things.

In W’burg, Bill Clinton Decries ‘Absence of Serious Debate’ Among Berners

IMG_7401

When you see a saxophone on stage at Brooklyn Bowl and know Bill Clinton is moments away from walking on, you have to wonder whether he’s going to go full Arsenio. Sadly, he did not jump in with the Wailers as they performed a couple of Marley hits, “One Love” and “Could You Be Loved,” at last night’s fundraiser for Hillary Clinton. But it’s still safe to say everyone who forked over $250 and up got their money’s worth.

Meet the Mad Puppeteer Who Brought ‘Hillary’s Nose’ to the March For Bernie

(Photo: Lilly Maier)

Elliot Crown is an actor who likes the political, an activist who loves creativity. Mash that together and you get one of New York’s only political puppeteers. His puppets have been widely covered, but people rarely see the man behind the mask. Aside from his political theater, Crown also works “about 14 jobs, like all actors in New York” and appeared in the movie Isn’t It Delicious. Crown, who has been “45 for quiet a while,” shares his East Village apartment with many of the papier mâché masks he created – like the Donald Trump with $-eyes or Hillary Clinton’s Pinocchio nose.

Where to Watch Hillary and Bernie Go At It Tonight

(Photo: Daniel Maurer)

Brooklynites were hoping to see a Bernie vs. Hillary showdown in their borough after the Sanders campaign proposed a debate there. But since team Clinton has declined the invitation for now, we’ll all have to tune into MSNBC tonight at 9 p.m. to watch the presidential hopefuls duke it out in Durham, New Hampshire. Doing a shot every time Bernie says “the top 1/10th of 1 percent” is much more fun with fellow imbibers, so here’s where to get out and watch.

Nader: Hillary Would Crush Warren, But Her ‘Coronation Wouldn’t Be Good’ For Dems

Iconic political gadfly Ralph Nader, who has run for president five times without success on third party tickets, said last night that Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren “would be crushed” if she ran for the Oval Office, claiming, “She’s not good on foreign or military policy.”

Hundreds of Hillary Fans (and a Couple of Haters) Lined Up in Union Square

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

Hillary Clinton fans, young and old, wrapped around four blocks in Union Square this morning, waiting for what one called a “historic moment” — a book signing at Barnes & Noble by their hero, the pantsuited pol who claims she hasn’t yet made up her mind about running for president.

Which Pol Would You Rather Meet: Hillary or Gnarr?

Who’ll spark the longer line tomorrow morning: David Chang’s hamburger or Hillary Clinton? The First Lady turned Senator turned Secretary of State (turned President?) is signing her new book, Hard Choices, at the Barnes & Noble in Union Square tomorrow at 11 a.m., and chances are pretty good there’ll be a line of James Franco proportions when the wristbands are handed out at 8 a.m. (you’ll have to buy a book to get one, and no, Hillary won’t sign your Benghazi bumper sticker.)
