Kids Store Is Leaving ‘No Fun’ Williamsburg for Greenpoint

Turns out Academy Annex’s impending move to Greenpoint will bring with it an unexpected bundle of joy: a children’s store!

When Kate Schmitz, the owner of Flying Squirrel, learned that she and Academy owner Mike Davis had to clear out of the space they share on N. 6th St., she decided to follow her longtime friend north.

Schmitz first met Davis when she was 20 and her roommate played in a band with him. About ten years ago, when Davis decided to bring an outpost of his East Village record shop to Brooklyn, they put their heads together and realized that selling baby stuff and vinyl in tandem was a no-brainer.

Academy Annex Will Leave Williamsburg and Turn Greenpoint into a Vinyl Mecca

Academy Annex is moving on up – from Williamsburg to Greenpoint.

Owner Mike Davis says the record store has to leave its current building on N. 6th St. because it’s “getting torn down to make way for much needed luxury condos” (dude, good one).

Shirts & Destroy Leaves the City, But You Can Still Rock Its Tees

Shirts & Destroy – a company that releases tee shirts designed by local artists, tattooers and bands – has closed its Greenpoint store and is leaving the city.

Ryan Begley opened the brick-and-mortar version of his online shop two years ago, but had to close it earlier this month due to – you guessed it – a rent hike. Two of them, actually: one at the shop at 293 Manhattan Ave. and the other at his Lower East Side apartment.

Kool Thing: Kim Gordon Is Crashing in Greenpoint These Days

North Brooklyn has seen a lot of Kim Gordon in the past month: she introduced a screening of “A Woman Under the Influence” at Nighthawk and performed with Body/Head, her project with noise guitarist Bill Nace, at Saint Vitus during Northside. Plus, that show at Knockdown Center in May.

No, she hasn’t been commuting in from her home in Western Massachusetts. Turns out, the former(?) Sonic Youth bassist/singer/guitarist/blond-badass has been “keeping a room in a friend’s apartment” in Greenpoint since March, according to her rep at Matador Records.
