Tonight at the B+B Newsroom we screened The Domino Effect, a film about the development of the Domino Sugar factory. When we reported in August that demolition of part of the Domino Sugar Factory had been approved, Megan Sperry told us that Williamsburgers have “gotten used to losing” to Two Trees and many now feel that the developer’s radical transformation of the waterfront is a “done deal.”
Tonight at the Newsroom, we’ll be screening Sperry’s film on the subject, The Domino Effect. The 7 p.m. screening will be followed by a discussion featuring filmmakers Brian Paul and Daniel Phelps, Colin Miles of Save Domino, and Daniel Campo, author of The Accidental Playground, a new book surveying the wilder days of the East River waterfront. Demolition of the Domino Factory is just about underway, and Two Trees has every permit and rezoning it needs to move forward with construction of its waterfront apartments. But on Friday afternoon, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development held a hearing about a rule change proposed by Two Trees that would affect the tax breaks for developers who create affordable housing. This has agitated activists who oppose the “poor door” measures that some recent developments are accused of taking, from The Edge to Northside Piers to the impending Greenpoint Landing.

A massive wooden construction barrier has gone up along the Kent Avenue side of the Domino Sugar factory; workers were seen nearing completion of the Grand Street side of the wall today, all but completely shielding the doomed complex (minus the landmarked refinery, of course) from view forevermore.
