photo-7The real Marina Abramović is often busy chatting with the New Yorker about “being present,” making a film about James Franco and perfecting the Abramović Method, which mere mortals will soon be able to learn at the Marina Abramović Institute. Thankfully, the trend to imitate, pay tribute to or otherwise parody the famed performance artist means that we can always get our fix, even when the artist herself is not present.

The Burlesque Festival Is Back But Oh Man, Wait Till You See Boylesque

“I’m actually fairly shy,” said Eric Gorsuch last Friday night, just hours before he strutted onto a small stage on the Bowery, flicked off some six-inch heels, and stripped down to a thong that resembled a sparkling sea anemone. “I’m not the best conversation starter,” he said. “I’m very self-conscious.” This is a man who, at six-foot-four in height, regularly does the splits upside down over a tiny stool, with abs painted on before each show.

Burlesque for Nerds and a Dance Party with Imelda Marcos

Tburlesque Blitzhe prolific Horsetrade Theater Group, which operates the Kraine Theater and Under St. Marks in the East Village, is getting even busier than usual, with a Summer Burlesque Blitz beginning July 18. Four days of live performances include GeekBoys (a “Nerdy-Burly review” with bearded strip-tease artists making pop culture references) and RAWR! Burlesque, which has performances in honor of classic cult films. Expect jokes about light sabers at either or both.
