Now Kim Gordon is the one who’s all over town (with Lee Ranaldo making the occasional appearance, as he did this past weekend at Trans-Pecos) while Thurston is off touring Europe. But good news, The Thurston Moore Band is back in the States this summer.

Jon Fine Talks Glory Days of Indie Rock as Recounted in Your Band Sucks

In a matter of a few years, Jon Fine, formerly of the band Bitch Magnet, went from an indie rock lifer cavorting from Williamsburg warehouse party to coke-soaked dive bar and barely making enough to make rock bottom rent on his train-side apartment to contributing on air to CNBC and writing columns for BusinessWeek. Clearly, those were different days– that same Williamsburg apartment would cost a small fortune to rent now and Fine suffers from permanent hearing loss, though he’s happily married and is the author of a new book Your Band Sucks. Fine’s memoir traces his rise to indie fame as the guitar player for Bitch Magnet to ultimately, what he calls, “the failed revolution.”

This week is your last chance to see The Punk Singer on the big screen, and you should definitely, definitely catch this cool doc about Kathleen Hanna – one of the most visible and outspoken figures of the Riot Grrl movement – before it leaves IFC Center and Nitehawk on Thursday.
The film’s archival footage of Hanna’s band Bikini Kill – not to mention its interviews with Kim Gordon, Hanna’s bandmates in Le Tigre and her husband Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys – filled us with so much nostalgia for the ‘90s (when Courtney Love was so, so much nuttier than she is now) that we were inspired to check out the Riot Grrrl Collection at NYU’s Fales Library.

There’s a New Flea Market, and This One Has a Live Piano Player
After hosting some epic events over the summer (Tiki Disco, Kim Gordon) the onetime factory that goes by the name Knockdown Center is remodeling so it can reopen as a proper arts center in the spring. In the meantime, it’s using its sprawling grounds in the best way possible: last weekend it launched a year-round flea market.

Pat Ivers and Emily Armstrong are sifting through their voluminous archive of punk-era concert footage as it’s digitized for the Downtown Collection at NYU’s Fales Library. This week: a look back at DNA.
“How dare you play your guitar like that! Don’t you know that’s the same instrument that Eric Clapton plays?” Audience members were often quick to share their dissatisfaction with the screeching dissonance that Arto Lindsay wrung from his instrument during a feverish set. So whenever his no wave band DNA finished up, Lindsay was sure to pack up quickly.
“It was the music I liked to play,” Lindsay says. “I thought the more far out you were, the more likely you were to be hailed as the next Jimi Hendrix. I just wanted to see what music would do to people. “

Don’t Even Think About Parking On J.J. Jenkins’s Stool at Union Pool

Twelve years ago, when he helped turn a garage behind Union Pool into an informal music venue, J.J. Jenkins couldn’t have imagined that it would end up drawing big names like Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, who’ll play there with Body/Head in September.
Jenkins first started going to the Williamsburg bar after moving from Swarthmore, Pennsylvania with his now-defunct country and blues-rock band in ’93. He became such a mainstay that one day he received the ultimate honor: a permanent reserved seat marked by an eponymous brass plaque in the rail of the bar.
