Williamsburg’s Bar Beau Serves Coffee By Day, and Soon Cocktails By Night

Bar Beau (Photo: Claire Chan)

I know what you’re thinking: Does Brooklyn really need another café? But this is no ordinary coffee shop. Bar Beau, which opened on Monday, works overtime for it patrons, doubling as a coffee shop by day and trendy cocktail bar by night.

The coffee bar’s architecture also lends it an unusual appeal. Crisp lines of marble intersect with the ceiling’s plaster curves, evoking rocky cliffs and turbulent waters in an homage to the Pacific Northwest background of owner Claire Chan, who also operates the West Village café The Elk.  The cocktail-slash-cafe is named for her nephew, Beau. “My roots are PNW (Vancouver, Canada), so it was important for me to integrate that into this “home away from home,” says Chan.

A Visit to Williamsburg’s New Food Hall, North 3rd Street Market

Though it’s one of Smorgasburg’s home bases, Williamsburg hadn’t yet gotten one of the glitzy food halls that have been popping up all over Manhattan. That changed when North 3rd Street Market opened at 103 N 3rd this month, bringing with it ramen from Chuko (to make up for its closing in Bushwick), lobster rolls from Greenpoint/Rockaway fixture Lobster Joint, sandwiches and burritos from Lower East Side transplants Regina’s Grocery and Jajaja, croissants from Ben Cuit, cappuccinos from Champion Coffee, rolls from GoFish Sushi Box, and more. DJs from Halycon, the record shop inside of Williamsburg club Output, pair the eats with beats. Maybe most exciting, pizza institution Di Fara has set up its first satellite oven here, which means you’ll no longer have to trek out to Midwood to scarf what many consider to be the best pie in the city. Watch our video to check out the scene and hear from vendors and customers.

Pretty Sweet: Williamsburg’s New Waterfront Wonderland, Domino Park

South Williamsburg’s Domino Park is finally finished and open to the public, and it is a gleaming example of what approximately $50 million can do with six acres of prime waterfront property. Funded entirely by Brooklyn mega-developers Two Trees Management, who are also responsible for the mini-city of luxury apartments springing up where the Domino Sugar Factory once stood, this undeniably lovely quarter-mile park and esplanade amounts to a fantastic amenity to all new and future residents of site. Fortunately for the rest of us, it’s one amenity that they have to share with the public.

Mad Props: Acme Studio Leaves Williamsburg For Bushwick

What may be the “most unique studio in New York” (and the only one to continually throw a party featuring a live llama) has left its longtime home on Williamsburg’s North 3rd Street and Kent Avenue. As of June 1, ACME Studio has moved its operations entirely to its Bushwick warehouse location on Meserole Street, as well as consolidated its business to focus on props. More →

While you’re checking out Artists & Fleas and all the other usual suspects, don’t miss these pop-up markets coming to Williamsburg in the coming weekends.

Brooklyn Flea Record Fair
Sat, May 19, 11am-6pm at East River State Park, 90 Kent Ave., Williamsburg.
Crate-diggers and foodies unite! Smorgasburg gets an upgrade this weekend as the Brooklyn Flea’s recurring record fair joins the food fest in East River State Park. The lineup of 60-odd vinyl vendors includes local shops (Academy, Halcyon, Captured Tracks, Rough Trade, even shuttered St. Marks Place shop Rocket Science Records), local labels and distributors (Knitting Factory Records, Mexican Summer, Nublu Records, Sacred Bones, Domino Recording Co.), collectors whose stuff you’d normally have to buy off of Discogs, and more. To complete the dream record store experience, tastemakers from some of these fine places (including Nublu, Mexican Summer, Academy, and Greenpoint’s The Lot Radio) will be manning the decks as you shop.

‘Everybody Got Laid Here’: Williamsburg Loses Another Venue as Legion Bar Closes

Patrons outside Legion bar on its closing night, 5/13/18 at 12am. (Photos: Nick McManus)

Williamsburg’s Legion Bar closed its doors early Sunday morning for a legion of regulars. The closing was bittersweet for Merle Chornuk, who opened Legion in 2005 with the hopes of it being a busier bar than it turned out to be. “It’s the end of an era,” he told me. “I’m moving on to other things.”

Williamsburg Luxury Apartment Dwellers Get Ad-Blaring Cars to Survive the L-Pocalpyse

(Courtesy of Level bk)

Luxury apartment amenities tend toward the ridiculous, as if a wine tasting room is going to justify paying $3,000 for a studio. (And what exactly is an “arts and crafts atelier,” anyway?) But this one is admittedly pretty sweet. Residents of Williamsburg’s Level bk tower are getting access to e-cars. Hey, at least someone will survive the impending L-pocalypse.

Jaassoon the Williamsburg Waiter Wants to Tell You About the Bipolar Broccoli Rabe in a Conflict-Diamond Gastrique

How many times have you had to keep from laughing as a Brooklyn server unloaded a mouthful of pretentious banter about some overpriced specials? Well, feel free to LOL as Jaassoon the Williamsburg waiter tell you about tonight’s “appie speshiez.” The psyched server is the creation of Gary DeNoia, an improv and sketch comic who does a hilarious impression of Adam Driver trying to shop for Doc Martens at Two Boots Pizza (get it? Two Boots?). Jaassoon seems like he’s high on his own supply as he tells you about the Car Key Bump Lime Pie.
