Love You, Aziz, But You Can’t Just Close Down the New Rooftop Bar to Film Master of None

Look, love Aziz Ansari and congos on the Emmy noms, but when you hop on the L train thinking you’re going to check out the hot new rooftop bar only to get to Westlight and be told it’s closed because Master of None is filming there, AGGHHHHHHHH. I mean, one thing is for a shoot to take over a shit-ton of parking spots, like Master of None will do when it films in the vicinity of Grand Street and Roebling on Tuesday and Wednesday. That’s a hassle for people who park in Williamsburg, but luckily I’m not one of them. I am, however, the guy who crossed a river last night in hopes of catching a glimpse of this rhombus flooring Nicole Disser was all agog about, only to be told, “Try again tomorrow.” Tomorrow? There’s not even going to be a tomorrow if I’m forced to go over to Turkey’s Nest and drink non-premium cocktails.

Stop Your Shivering, Cuz Caracas Is Delivering

(Photo: Daniel Maurer)

(Photo: Daniel Maurer)

East Villagers are living in a golden age of arepas. Last month Arepa Factory opened on Avenue A and now the longtime beacon of Venezuelan grub, Caracas Arepa Bar, has finally, finally started delivering. The news comes to us from the folks at DoorDash, a service we didn’t even know existed (hey, it’s hard to keep track of them all) until we got the heads up that, like David Chang’s Maple, they just expanded (in the case of DoorDash, to midtown). DoorDash’s inventory of restaurants runs pretty deep, from Taco Bell to Tacombi. But the addition of Caracas is what sells us on it — if you’ve spent any amount of time in line at their Rockaway location, you know their arepas are summer in a corn shell, so this is like having a ray of sunshine delivered straight to your dreary, drafty little cubicle.

Fuku Starts Delivering, Immediately Breaks Caviar

(Photo: Caviar)

We thought today’s expansion of Maple would be the most exciting delivery news in David Chang’s world (anyone who orders lunch or dinner gets one of Christina Tosi’s “Sugar Shack” cookies, gratis), but an email from Caviar managed to steal its thunder. The haute delivery service is now dispatching Fuku’s spicy fried chicken sandwich and other items from Chang’s budding fast casual chain. But much as there was a line down the block when Fuku first opened in the East Village in June, it proved hard to get our hands on some Fuku fingers this morning.

Farewell to Josh Ozersky, ‘King of Avenue C’

When I read that Josh Ozersky died Monday while in Chicago for the James Beard Awards, I was shocked not only by the sudden loss of a true dynamo, but also by the news that he had recently, “quietly” moved to Portland, Oregon. The self-described “Walter Winchell of the restaurant world” didn’t really do anything quietly (when chasing scoops for Grub Street left him with no time to get to therapy, he occasionally took sessions over the phone, in the tiny office we shared), but I wouldn’t be surprised if leaving New York was the one thing he was discrete about.

What’s the Tougher Table: Momofuku Ko or the Cat Cafe?

catchang

It’s been just about a month since the city’s first permanent cat cafe opened, right on the heels of Momofuku Ko’s relaunch in a swanky new space on Extra Place. When they first hit the scene, their calendars were jam-packed with reservations, scaring off many a would-be cat cuddler and caviar connoisseur. Are they any easier to get into these days? Let’s take a look!
