Williamsburg is constantly changing, as evidenced by the recent closings of The Abbey and Rosemary’s Greenpoint Tavern. But some can remember a time before there was a Chase and a Sephora on Bedford Avenue. They even have photographs from back then.

Williamsburg became a boozy funeral row on Thursday with the closings of Rosemary’s Greenpoint Tavern and The Abbey. Nostalgic drinkers bounced from Bedford to Driggs all night, filling both bars to the brim for hours.

Williamsburg’s “BEST NO BULLSHIT, NO TOURISTS, ALL AROUND GREAT LOCAL BAR” is closing. The Abbey, a neighborhood fixture for over two decades, will shutter this Thursday. This follows news that two other local longtimers, Enid’s and Rosemary’s Greenpoint Tavern, are also closing.
The owner of the building at 536 Driggs plans to fully renovate it, according to a permit application that was approved last week.

Back in 2017, San Loco left the East Village after 30 years of serving tacos there, and last year it left Bushwick. Now the “gringo Mex” institution is closing up its Williamsburg shop, in part because of the L train “nightmare.” Its last day will be February 24, but the owners hope to reopen nearby and have launched a fundraiser in hopes that fans will, well, shell out.

There’s a building at 104 Powers Street in Williamsburg, an inconspicuous row house just around the corner from the rooftop bars, art galleries and coffee shops near the Lorimer L stop on Metropolitan Avenue. White clapboard slats, sloping roof. Look closer, and there’s a discreet, white turret topped with a crescent. On a recent Sunday, right after Spanish-language services, an eight-piece mariachi band streamed into the St. Nicholas Catholic Church in East Williamsburg. Guitars and trumpets blended together in a musical homage to the Virgin of Guadalupe, a venerated figure who symbolizes devotion throughout the Latino community. Just below in the main hall, a feast was on the tables and flowers, flags and banners surrounded the virgin’s likeness.
