SUMMARY:Brooklyn Small Press Flea
DESCRIPTION:This is definitely one for the book fetishists out there. BOMB Magazine organizes this yearly affair\, which has only grown in size while Big Publishing has been on the wane– great freaking news for small presses. In fact the organizers had to turn away some indie press latecomers due to lack of space. Books aren’t dead\, yay! Readers can browse offerings from 30 small presses at an outdoor market next to the Brooklyn Public Library. The book makers come from all over Brooklyn and beyond\, and include Futurepoem\, The New Inquiry\, and Wonder.\nRead more here.

SUMMARY:Panel: 'The Hustle'
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re harboring literary ambitions or are just curious\, “The Hustle” should be an entertaining glimpse into what its like to be a successful professional writer. The discussion includes authors Angela Flournoy\, Leigh Stein and Jennifer Baker\, who will delve right into the personal stuff like how they pay bills and how they get work done\, and these guys know how to do it right; Flournoy’s book The Turner House was a Times Sunday book review editor’s choice\, Baker does everything from writing restaurant reviews to hosting the new podcast “Minorities in Publishing\,” and Stein’s recent collection of poetry was described by Publishers Weekly as “a mix both giddy and anguished that incorporates elements from fairy tale\, pop-culture\, ancient myth\, and choose-your-own-adventure books.”\n \n

SUMMARY:On Andy Warhol: Wayne Koestenbaum in Conversation with Stephen Koch
DESCRIPTION:Discover an Andy Warhol who is “anything but the removed observer of most popular accounts” with critic\, poet and CUNY professor Wayne Koestenbaum\, whose writing style has been described as “an impossible lovechild from a late-night\, drunken three-way between Joan Didion\, Roland Barthes\, and Susan Sontag.” He’ll be joined by Stephen Koch\, author of Stargazer: The Life\, World and Films of Andy Warhol\, for an in-depth discussion about the enigmatic pop artist.

SUMMARY:Talk: Annie Liontas On 'Let Me Explain You'
DESCRIPTION:What would you do if you believed you had only 10 days to live? Now\, what would you do if your dad thought that and in response sent scathing emails to all his family members about how they should better live their lives? That’s the premise of Annie Liontas’ novel Let Me Explain You\, told from the perspective of a proud Greek restaurant owner\, his two daughters\, and the many other voices that come together to create “a big\, rollicking\, tender novel with a truly original comic voice\,” as described by celebrated short story writer George Saunders. Join Liontas for a conversation with Dana Spiotta\, author of Stone Arabia. Buy a copy of Let Me Explain You or a $15 strand gift card to attend the event\, which will admit one person.

SUMMARY:What in the World: BuzzFeed\, Mashable and Vice
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve managed to miss the somewhat obnoxious Vice/You Tube advertisements plastered all over the city (“YOU don’t just watch the news\,” apparently)\, then let me fill you in: Vice Media\, erstwhile counterculture teen zine from Montreal\, is now valued at $1.4 billionand radically expanding its international coverage. Their recent Islamic State video series quickly went viral\, and no doubt there’s more where that came from. Meanwhile\, BuzzFeed and Mashable are also looking to edge into the global space. Join Louise Roug (Global News Editor\, Mashable)\, Miriam Elder (Foreign Editor\, Buzzfeed)\, and Jason Mojica (Editor in Chief\, VICE News)\, for a conversation chaired by Amy O’Leary of the New York Times innovation team.

SUMMARY:Daphne Merkin in Conversation with Sasha Weiss
DESCRIPTION:Daphne Merkin may have achortle-inducing last name\, but her often painfully personal articles for publications like The New Yorker and The New York Times Magazine tended to be more mortifying than mirthful. Subjects like her battle with depression\, her spanking fetish\, and her years of therapy have made up a good chunk of Merkin’s oeuvre\, a fact belied by her latest book\, The Fame Lunches. Lunches deals in less sensational Merkin material: 45 examples of her cultural writing stretching back to the 1980s. Billed byKirkus Reviews as “Essays that go down like candy but nourish like health food\,” the book has also been praised by Woody Allen for it’s “strikingly original take on the human condition.” Merkin will be in conversation with newyorker.com’s literary editor\, Sasha Weiss.

SUMMARY:Debt Jam: Student Debt Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:If you’d rather rhyme about your money troubles than debate possible policy fixes for them\, allow me to suggest Mellow Pages’ Debt Jam: a night of poetry and banjo to celebrate the recent announcement from Rolling Jubilee that they have purchased and abolished a portfolio of student debt. Brought to you by Strike Debt\, the reading is designed to help young\, immiserated (but educated!) persons to “speak out\, rock out\, and create beauty out of the wreckage debt has created in our lives.” Sounds like a jam to me.

SUMMARY:Just in Time: A Broadly Speaking Event
DESCRIPTION:Increasingly\, workers in the restaurant and retail industry are at the mercy of “just in time” scheduling: a system that might seem dreamily flexible for 9-5 jobbers\, but in fact makes already struggling workers even more vulnerable to job insecurity. Such a scheme (in which shifts are scheduled with little advance notice\, and are subject to last-minute cancellation) allows companies to boost profits while removing the possibility of steady pay-checks for employees\, and making childcare\, further education and public assistance even more difficult to arrange. This New America NYCevent brings together Jodi Kantor (New York Times correspondent)\, Liza Mundy (author of The Richer Sex) and Melody Pabon (a former Zara cashier and now retail union member and activist)\, to discuss the challenges inherent in the rise of “just in time\,” and possible policy approaches.

SUMMARY:Hot\, Wet and Shaking: Talking About Sex with Kaleigh Trace
DESCRIPTION:Kaleigh Trace is a disabled\, queer\, feminist sex educator with a mission: to promote “safe\, shame-free and consensual sex people of all abilities\, ethnicities\, races\, orientations\, and gender identities.” Among other things\, she co-wrote and appeared in the above music video in response to Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.” Now\, Trace is down from Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, to promote her new book. Hot\, Wet and Shaking: How I Learned to Talk About Sex is “a book about having sex by yourself\, with one person\, or with twenty people if everyone is down.” It’s a memoir-cum (ha!)-manual that doesn’t skimp on risqué detail. If you still feel like an awkward teenager when it comes to sex talk\, or if (god forbid!) you were under the impression that disabled people aren’t fucking\, come along and wise up.

SUMMARY:Christian Rudder presents Dataclysm
DESCRIPTION:Christian Rudder is co-founder and President of OkCupid—yes\, the same OkCupid that has rescued your “love” life from the doldrums and is now the only reason you ever leave the house even though sometimes it makes you feel as if the search is futile—and he’s now also the author ofDataclysm. The book is subtitledWho We Are (When We Think No One’s Looking)\, and whether that sounds ominous to you or not probably depends on your stance on the highly controversial personal data mining carried out by the likes of Facebook\, Twitter\, and (yes!) OkCupid. Blithely sidestepping the political ramifications of such practices\, Rudder instead dives enthusiastically into the social science potential of big data. Dataclysm examines what our online lives reveal about who we really are\, focusing intently on the magical potential of the algorithm.

SUMMARY:Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz at the Morbid Anatomy Museum
DESCRIPTION:First things first: if you haven’t been to Morbid Anatomy Museum yet\, you should probably go ASAP. It’s a hotbed of macabre romance\, and you’re missing out. Now that that’s settled\, why not go along and learn things whilst perusing the petrified remains? Next week\, author and poet Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz will be relating the story of Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter\, the founder of Philidelphia’s heralded Mütter Museum—arguably America’s finest museum of medical oddities. Mütter was a brilliant young surgeon whose compassion-based philosophies were revolutionary for his time\, and whose enthusiasm for collecting paved the way for the museum erected in his name. O’Keefe Aptowicz is a prolific poet and author; Dr. Mutter’s Marvels: A True Tale of Intrigue and Innovation at the Dawn of Modern Medicine is her second foray into non-fiction.

SUMMARY:Zakia Salime: Gender and Sexuality in the Arab Uprisings
DESCRIPTION:Zakia Salime is a scholar of sociology and women and gender studies\, whose work focuses on the fascinating intersection of feminist and Islamist politics. Her bookBetween Feminism and Islam: Human Rights and Sharia Law in Morocco (2011) examines the interplay between global concepts of human rights and localised alternatives. In so doing\, the study reveals how these complex negotiations have led to the feminization of the Islamist movement one the one hand\, and the Islamization of the feminist movement on the other. If you’re sick of reading simplistic arguments about the subjugation or otherwise of Muslim women\, Salime is a breath of fresh air. Her work forgoes the common conception of Islam and feminism as inherently antagonistic doctrines\, and reframes Muslim women as agents negotiating global policies and building alternative understandings of rights.

SUMMARY:Linda Davies and Jon McGoran Reading
DESCRIPTION:Novelists Jon McGoran and Linda Davies will be reading from recent work. McGoran has written about food and sustainability for many years\, but has a burgeoning book-writing business on the side. His recently released second novel Deadout\, injects his passion for environmental issues into a deftly-handled detective story\, complete with genetically modified super bees and dastardly biotech corporations. “McGoran fluidly blends science and suspense in his outstanding second eco-thriller\,” according to Publisher’s Weekly. Davies\, meanwhile\, is a former investment banker\, whose debut novel Nest of Vipers has now sold over 2 million copies. Vipers is a financial industry thriller\, driven by a risk-taking female foreign exchange trader stuck between a rock (the Mafia) and a hard place (the British SIS). The evening will be hosted by Richie Narvaez.

SUMMARY:Megan Abbot + Chelsea Cain
DESCRIPTION:Who says girls can’t be crime writers? Well\, no one actually\, because that’s clearly not a valid argument. But just in case some loser out there is preparing his talking points\, let me present a succinct rebuttal: Megan Abbott and Chelsea Cain. Abbot is author of recently released The Fever(“a chilling story about guilt\, family secrets\, and the lethal power of desire” set in a small town whose female teenage inhabitant are in the throes of a mysterious plague)\, while Cain has produced numerous best-selling books. Her latest\, One Kick\, is the first in a new series featuring protagonist Kick Lannigan—famously kidnapped as a child\, and now called upon to help solve a new missing child case. These ladies are clearly queens of suspense: The Guardian called One Kick “a dark\, dangerous journey into evil to find the vanished children\, and entirely hide-away-until-you-finish-it gripping\,” while the New York Timesfound The Fever “a gripping and unsettling novel.” See the terrible two in conversation at The Strand.

SUMMARY:Stitched up: The Anti-Capitalist Book of Fashion with Tansy Hoskins
DESCRIPTION:And if you thought fashion-talk might offer some light relief from the horrors of the death railway\, think again. Tansy Hoskins’ recently released book Stitched Up: The Anti-Capitalist Book of Fashiondelves into the grimy underbelly of the beauty-obsessed industry: exposing the class division\, gender stereotyping and wasteful consumption plaguing the world of fashion. If you own a closet and keep garments in it\, it behooves you to take note of this insightful indictment of the distorting priorities of capitalism.

SUMMARY:Readings from Yale Writers’ Conference Faculty
DESCRIPTION:The Yale Writers’ Conference is a rigorous program for “the committed writer” held on the Ivy League University’s leafy-gothic campus. Sounds somewhat terrifying\, if intellectually stimulating. Now\, however\, you can experience the collective genii of the faculty without the hefty tuition fee. JoinEileen Pollack\, Terence Hawkins\, Teddy Wayne\, and David Gorin for an evening of letters\, in the markedly less intimidating environs of the KGB Bar. Creative writing is SO MUCH MORE CREATIVE when there is vodka.

SUMMARY:Richard Flanagan in Conversation with Patrick McGrath
DESCRIPTION:Richard Flanagan’s latest novel\,The Narrow Road to the Deep North\, is based on the experience of an Australian man in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp on the 1943 Thai-Burma death railway. This sounds fairly grim\, and indeed the novel oscillates “between scenes of relentless violence and the desolations of war’s aftermath” while nevertheless (!) offering the possibility of redemption. This magician-worthy feat\, courtesy of Flanagan’s literary prowess\, has been rewarded with a Booker nomination. The author’s previous works (including Gould’s Book of Fish and The Sound of One Hand Clapping) have also been highly praised. See the man himself in conversation with Patrick McGrath\, a writer of ‘gothic fiction’. Looks to be a cheery evening\, then.

SUMMARY:Maureen Callahan’s Champagne Supernovas! with Susannah Cahalan
DESCRIPTION:If you’re around my age\, and were an equally uncool child\, the nineties were an unmitigated fashion disaster: stretchy black bellbottoms and puffer-jacket vests\, and indefensibly ugly platform sneakers (seriously\, did you have those in America? Erryone in New Zealand was all about that shit. I blame the Spice Girls). Heck\, even Carrie Bradshaw was making someway out weird fashion choices. But Maureen Callahan clearly has a different recollection of the era\, and has published a book to prove it. In Champagne Supernovas! she presents a look at the “exciting fashion trends” of the 90s (what could this mean? fashion bindis? mood rings?). Callahan focuses her rose-tinted lenses on Kate Moss\, Alexander McQueen and Marc Jacobs: leading lights of the star-studded grunge era\, when—apparently—the alternative went mainstream. Callahan will be defending her thesis against Susannah Cahalan\, author of Brain on Fire.

SUMMARY:An Ecclectic Evening of Poetry and Prose
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based writer Matthew Hodges hosts an evening of readings with a crew of exciting new voices.Lauren Keils is a Brooklyn-based poet (and painter and possibly a psychadelic singer and definitely an amateur taxidermist) from Detroit.Zan de Parry\, too\, hails from Michigan. Elizabeth Mikesch is the owner of Brest Pressand the author of Niceties\, “a subversive text of lingual dissonance in which vocality precedes sense-making operations.” May-Lan Tan—a young poet whose first book was deemed “an excellent debut about loners and outcasts” by The Guardian—will also be reading\, as will Beth Steidle\, whose recently published The Static Herd (a starkly lyrical meditation on death) earned praise from Heavy Feather Review.

SUMMARY:That’s When the Knives Come Down with Dolan Morgan
DESCRIPTION:Greenpointer Dolan Morgan will read on home turf for the Brooklyn launch of his debut collection That’s When the Knives Come Down. A surrealist glance at cities\, relationships and lives gone awry\, the stories are billed as simultaneously “absurd\, harrowing\, and inimitable.” According to Catherine Lacey\, “Dolan Morgan queers the every day and leaves a sinister domestic scene behind.” He’ll be joined in discussion by B.C. SUMMARY:Sideshow Goshko
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning storyteller Leslie Goshko (Huffington Post\, Manhattan Monologue Slam Champion) hosts this monthly storytelling show\, which invariably follows the same format. Goshko invites three top writers and storytellers to join her in sharing true\, bizarre tales about their lives for ten minutes apiece. Four challenging trivia questions are asked\, and one lucky audience member will receive a portion of “Sideshow Sauce” (aka a delectable bottle of Trader Joe’s vino). SUMMARY:Daniel Mendelsohn and Adrian Goldsworthy On Emperor Augustus
DESCRIPTION:If ancient Rome is more your bag than medieval fantasy/sci-fi\, then allow us to recommend this pow-wow on Emperor August (nee Gaius Octavius)\, featuring the inimitable Daniel Mendelsohn—whose expansive critical capacities have bent upon both the Odyssey and Mad Men. Mendelsohn will be discussing Augustus\, the third ofStoner author John Williams’ great novels. Published in 1972\, the book has recently been reissued with an intro by Mendelsohn. The novel\, largely epistolary\, follows the life and career of the first emperor of Rome—and was praised by the Financial Times for its “extraordinary range” and “extraordinary minuteness.” Mendelsohn will be joined by Adrian Goldsworthy\, whose biography Augustus: From Revolutionary to Emperor has just been published by Yale University Press.

SUMMARY:How to Overthrow the Illuminati
DESCRIPTION:I almost wish that we could take this one at face value\, and learn in earnest how to combat the shadowy organization that is (obviously!) slowly infiltrating the upper echelons of government\, business and media in order to implement a new world order through a complex system of signs and symbols. Sadly\, that’s not the case. Despite what you might have heard about the nefarious Illuminati connections of Jay-Z\, Beyonce\, Obama\, and Kim Kardashian\, The Base is not here to help us take the mofos down. Instead\, the leftist community organization believes that “Illuminati theory helps oppressed people to explain our experiences in the hood.” So they’ve put together a pamphlet redirecting attention to ways in which citizens can tackle the very real issues of oppression and exploitation. Come along\, and channel your abundant conspiracy theory energy into thinking about social change.

SUMMARY:Julie Schumacher + Ethan Rutherford
DESCRIPTION:Dear Committee Members\, Julie Schumacher’s eighth novel\, is an epistolary satire of academia that has been earning—as the title of a Slate review puts it\, “Strongest possible endorsement.” Made up of letters of recommendation written by a beleaguered literature professor (whose promising career in fiction is now just a fading memory)\, the book is a bitingly witty portrait of a dying English department and the embittered man who dwells in its decomposing innards. As Professor Fitger writes his oft-counterproductive endorsements\, his letters slowly become more unbalanced and autobiographical\, giving the reader glimpses into his past. Praised as a “mordant minor masterpiece\,” by NPR\, it sounds like the sort of book you should perhaps hurry up and finish during the summer—when the worn-out cynicism of the letter-writing professor seems more removed from the reality of your everyday working life. Schumacher will be joined in discussion by Ethan Rutherford\, author of The Peripatetic Coffin and Other Stories.

SUMMARY:The Public Library with Robert Dawson + Diane Caldwell
DESCRIPTION:Since 1994\, California-based photographer Robert Dawson has been travelling across the country\, capturing images of public libraries—those hallowed\, endangered urban oases of learning and contemplation. The result of his eighteen-year pilgrimage have now been collected into a handsome tome\, The Public Library: A Photographic Essay\, which is simultaneously a visual record of America’s libraries\, an examination of the manifold functions such institutions perform\, and an impassioned lamentation over their steady decline from public consciousness. In the book’s foreword\, veteran journalist Bill Moyers writes\, “when a library is open\, no matter its size or shape\, democracy is open\, too.” Dawson\, in effect\, presents a poignant argument for what’s at stake. He’ll be in conversation with Diane Cardwell\, business reporter for The New YorkTimes.
