Ad Hoc Expands to Greenpoint and Gets a Taste of Turf War

Since opening their second location in Greenpoint two weeks ago, the folks at Williamsburg-based Ad Hoc have been hard at work improving their inventory, despite what owner Ali Liu says is some “strange, passive-aggressive backlash.” The new Bedford Avenue location boasts impressive local talent: clothing designer and Fort Greener Ilana Kohn, tote and textile specialists Cold Picnic, also of Fort Greene, and architectural jewelry from The Things We Keep of Bed-Stuy.

Gerlan Marcel’s Museum-Worthy Designs Grew Out of Tween Trips to the Mall

Sitting in her Bushwick studio, fashion designer Gerlan Marcel looks like a 14-year-old out of a ’90s hip-hop video: she has two high-top braids on the side of her head, five-inch hoop earrings, wedge sneakers, a drawstring backpack and a black sweat suit covered in logos.

But Gerlan, who’s actually 37, doesn’t see her style as particularly youthful. “I think it’s sad that things like print and color are always equated with youth,” she said. “Like who’s to say that only young people should wear these things?”

For the Folks Who Light Up the Lady of Mount Carmel Feast, It’s Christmas in July

Tonight, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel will come to an end as the 72-foot, four-ton “giglio” is hoisted and returned to its shrine on N. 8th Street.

The rides will spin to a halt and the lights will come down.
