Book Launch: When We Fight, We Win!
Tuesday, January 5 at 7:00 p.m. at The Powerhouse Arena, 37 Main St, Brooklyn. (DUMBO)
The past year was filled with updates on the Black Lives Matter movement and a long-overdue Supreme Court victory for the LGBTQ movement. To take stock of the social movements shaping our world, turn to Greg Jobin-Leeds’ new collection. When We Fight, We Win!, a collaboration with AgitArte, profiles the successful activists and artists making waves behind the headlines you’ve seen flying by of late, from the fight to end mass incarceration to steps forward on immigration rights and environmental protection. The book launch will feature a conversation between Jobin-Leeds and AgitArte’s José Jorge Díaz, as well as remarks from activist leaders from the book, including Rachel Schragis, Felipe Sousa-Rodríguez, Isabel Sousa-Rodríguez, Che Gosset, Manissa McCleave Maharawal, Lily Paulina. Spectacle Theater Reopens, Shows Off Its New Digs

Spectacle Theater gets a makeover (Photo by Nicole Disser)
Our favorite lil’ indie theater reopens tonight as a renovation project that choked up the reels for a whole month nears completion. For a brief time last year, the future of Spectacle at South 3rd Street, where it has occupied the ground floor for the last five years, looked like it was in jeopardy. Thankfully, the volunteer-run movie theater successfully raised more than $40,000 through a Kickstarter campaign to fund an overhaul that saved it from being forced out. I popped by this morning to get a peek at what’s new, fingers crossed that the theater had stayed true to its roots.
Gallery’s ‘Bushwick 200’ List Sparks White-Hot Gentrification Debate
If you thought the season for “top 10” lists was over, think again: a Bushwick art gallery, Fuchs Projects, has stirred up some controversy with its planned “Bushwick 200” list.
Last week, the gallery announced that it was set to identify “the 200 most influential people in Bushwick in 2016 in the Arts, Restaurants and Bars, Music, performing arts, Entertainment, Health, Real Estate, Gaming, Design and Hi-tech.” The “comprehensive list” of those who are “shaping the neighborhood of Bushwick” and “transforming the conventional” is being compiled “with the help of more than a dozen experts in different fields of art and commerce,” according to the gallery.
See Laurie Anderson’s Concert For Dogs, Then Attend This Lou Reed Tribute
You’d think the recent revival of CBGB as an airport restaurant would be sufficient humiliation to convince New Yorkers to let go of their old haunts. But no. Hot on the heels of the Mudd Club rummage sale and the 50th anniversary celebration of Max’s Kansas City comes another 50th anniversary celebration of Max’s Kansas City.
East Village’s AMC Theater Gets Leather Recliners, So You Can Sleep Through Joy
The East Village will have to wait a little longer for 4DX, but at least there’s this: the AMC on Third Avenue has majorly upped its game with reclining leather seats. I saw Joy there over the holidays and for reasons completely unrelated to David O. Russell, it was a joy indeed.
Ayahuasca, Brunch, & Carlos D: 2015 at B+B, or the Most ‘Relevant’ Year Ever
When faced with a day like today, you might suddenly feel obliged to tick off the major events of the past year, reflect on what you’ve learned, and be grateful that you’ve managed to make it through (so far– we’ve still got several hours left to go). But if you’re anything like us, you’ll need a little help in navigating the haze standing between you and crystal clear recollection. Hence, a great way to say goodbye to 2015: our end times listicle in which we relive our 20 most popular posts of this past year.
