Three Kings Tattoo Was This Detroit Native’s Gateway to Brooklyn

Six years ago, Mike McNelis became a regular at Three Kings tattoo parlor by playing softball just as much as by getting inked. Originally from Detroit, McNelis works at Benjamin Moore Paints, helping contractors, architects, and designers find the best paint for their needs. The 37-year-old got into the paint game 15 years ago while putting himself through school at the University of Michigan and working for a painting contractor. After getting the itch to move, he bounced from Detroit to New Haven and then over to New York.

Big Bob Grady Has Found Camaraderie at Peter Pan Donut For 40 Years

The old timers sit in the back at Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop. That’s where regulars like Bob Grady (“a good Irish name”) drink their coffee and pass the time. Big Bob, as he’s affectionately known, is here every weekday around 10 a.m. With so many people coming in and so much conversation to have, he can stay sometimes all the way to 3 p.m.

You’ve Either Seen Tinuade Oyelowo On Girls, or Dancing at Bembe

Tinuade Oyelowo spends her days slinging soy lattes at Café Grumpy in Greenpoint and her late Saturday nights sweating on the dance floor at Bembe in Williamsburg. At Grumpy, she does double duty: after four months there, she was tapped to play a barista on HBO’s Girls. The 29-year-old Bed-Stuy resident appeared in two episodes last season and will appear in two more next season – “a very surreal New York experience.”

‘Style Junkie’ Sarah Lim Scores Her Local Cologne at In God We Trust

When In God We Trust’s first location opened on Wythe Avenue in 2005, it was a modest shop with a little studio in the back. In that small space, founder Shana Tabor designed original clothes and jewelry with uniquely irreverent touches. For instance: the instant classic, heart-shaped Sweet Nothing necklace with a handwritten inscription reading “kiss me where i pee.” The inaugural shop has since closed but three new stores opened in its place.

Charles Bellafiore Usually Finds Someone to Talk to at Enid’s

Last week, the unthinkable happened: Enid’s went dry. The Greenpoint bar’s liquor license expired and it went a week without being able to serve (yesterday it announced on Facebook: “booze is back!”). This was particularly a blow to Charles Bellafiore, who’s been a regular at Enid’s since it opened just before the turn of the century – which is a much cooler way of saying 1999.

The kitchen of the Greenpoint apartment that 28-year-old Mari de Monte shares with her cat, Nina Simone, just happens to look into the backyard of her favorite bar: Black Rabbit. She’s so big on the place, she has a tattoo of its logo on her arm.
