I only had one real conversation with Ray Abeyta. Luckily, I captured it for everybody to see. We met at his favorite hangout, the bar-restaurant Five Leaves, so I could interview him for The Regulars. I told him I’d seen him around town for 10 years and we had friends in common. He said I looked familiar. We ordered our drinks and the conversation flowed. His badass personality blazed before me.

If a French-Mexican fusion restaurant sounds weird, that’s only because it is. The thing is, the eclectic, dark but innocuous Santos Anne is weirdly charming. What really makes this place stand out to people who live in Williamsburg is its solid backyard. The value of an asset like that cannot be stressed enough. And regular Anna Sale gets that all too well. The 34-year-old journalist used to live in the neighborhood, and when she did, she’d find solace from the city in a small corner in the backyard lit by a living room lamp. Charming, eclectic, see?

Since 19-freakin’-93, Blonde Redhead has been conjuring killer music in New York freakin’ City. The trio – Italian twin brothers Amedeo and Simone Pace and Japanese chanteuse Kazu Makino – are absolute legends of noise-rock and sonic dreamscapes. First taken under the wing of Sonic Youth and later guided by Fugazi, the band constantly strives to create, as Simone says mystically, “something that feels right everywhere, that doesn’t feel it derives from anywhere but just comes because of something magical between us.” Their entire career has been defined by always feeling like outsiders in the city they call home.

Jad Abumrad is a genius. Really. In 2011, he received the ridiculously prestigious MacArthur Genius Award for creating “engaging audio explorations of scientific and philosophical questions” on his nationally syndicated WNYC show Radiolab, which he co-hosts with veteran broadcaster Robert Krulwich. When you listen to Jad talk on Radiolab or face-to-face at his favorite Brooklyn bar Splitty, it truly feels like you’re in the presence of a genius. He uses the word “quantum” way too casually and convincingly. And he drinks bourbon neat, which is definitely a genius-style drink.
