It isn’t often that one decides to change career paths at the age of 69, but that’s precisely what Paul Kessel did. In his previous life, Kessel was a psychologist and psychoanalyst but these days he roams the streets armed with his camera, capturing street scenes that catch his eye.

Do the mere mortals dining on club sandwiches at The Coffee Shop in Union Square have any idea that below their feet, dozens of models – the real kind, who will walk the runways of top designers for New York Fashion Week later this week – are sipping on coconut water, having Xbox dance-offs and getting professional massages? It doesn’t matter, really, because even if they did they wouldn’t be allowed to partake in the fun. The is a subterranean private space for models to relax, gossip in their native tongues and enjoy speakers and events aimed at helping to boost their careers.

The real Marina Abramović is often busy chatting with the New Yorker about “being present,” making a film about James Franco and perfecting the Abramović Method, which mere mortals will soon be able to learn at the Marina Abramović Institute. Thankfully, the trend to imitate, pay tribute to or otherwise parody the famed performance artist means that we can always get our fix, even when the artist herself is not present.

Those of you who eat exclusively “vegetable-based” food may have already heard of Young’s, the veggie enthusiasts best known for their stand at the Hester Street Fair. On March 6 and 7, the meatless masters will be hosting a pop-up restaurant at The Old Bowery Station in which guests can enjoy four courses of vegetarian fare with the option of beer or cocktail pairings. “All our food is made with alcohol in mind. That’s how we really win people over,” says chef and co-founder Jessica Young.

“This is fun,” said John Eatherly midway through the first gig of the East Village’s newest indie darlings, Public Access TV, at Niagara yesterday evening. Of course it was fun – the tiny venue was slammed with it-girls (Tennessee Thomas and Alexa Chung, for example), journalists and British music execs eager to see the fellas NME called “New York’s Hottest New Band.” Even Lindsay Lohan was there.

Everyone’s favorite connoisseur of all things retro and nostalgic, Mr. Throwback, gives us his weekly blast from the past.
Though nearly everyone who grew up in the ’90s feels a visceral connection to Full House, few have a tangible connection to the classic television series. As you might have guessed, Mr. Throwback is one of those lucky few. For those of you who are very, very young or Mennonites (though if you were a Mennonite, you probably wouldn’t be reading this) Full House was a family sitcom that aired on ABC for eight glorious seasons. The show follows the life of Danny Tanner, a recently widowed news anchor, as he raises his three daughters with the help of his friend, Joey Gladstone, and his brother-in-law, the oh so dreamy Jesse Katsopolis. Welcome to Last Night’s Playlist, in which our favorite DJs share the tunes they played last night.

For the very first instalment of Last Night’s Playlist, we’re pleased to feature a living nightlife legend, Justin Strauss. Strauss has been keeping folks dancing for decades – since well before the “death of New York nightlife” (i.e. Michael Alig’s incarceration). He’s played at infamous institutions like Area, Danceteria, Limelight and Tunnel. He’s remixed Tina Turner. He’s worked with Depeche Mode. And even after over three decades of spinning, remixing and producing, Strauss is still at the forefront of what’s fresh – under the moniker a/jus/ted – a collaborative project with Teddy Stuart – he’s remixed everyone from Holy Ghost! to Blood Orange.
Here are just a few tunes Strauss played yesterday evening at Output‘s Panther Room during his back to back set with Eric Duncan aka Dr Dunks. If you like what you hear, you can catch Strauss tomorrow night at the Bossa Nova Civic Club.

Mr. Throwback was just kidding around on Instagram] at his store. And yet he still found time to make his throwback pick of the week.

What appears to be an infinite black vortex in the miniscule space nestled between the Asian restaurants on East 10th Street are actually the detailed paintings of Korean artist Minjung Kim. Entitled “The Room” (not to be confused with the Tommy Wiseau flick that’s always playing at Sunshine) the exhibit is the artist’s first solo show in New York in over a decade, and it could not have found a more appropriate home than Oko, the nondescript East Village gallery known for its immersive art experiences.

With the overambitious lighting, lack of personal space and countless familiar faces (including the affable Shannon Moore, who along with other former Max Fish bartenders divulged his current whereabouts to us just last week), the Max Fish pop-up party at 203 Houston last night felt a helluva lot like the real deal. The folks who brought you the Lower East Side fixture teamed up with Klughaus gallery and Converse (who were responsible for providing guests with free booze, hoorah!), to pull off the event. Max Fish owner Ulli Rimkus — who last week told us there wasn’t a set date for the Williamsburg reopening — was all smiles, surrounded by her loyal staff and regulars.
