11 Folks Who Tweeted or Instagrammed Their Way Into Our Hearts Today

Screen Shot 2014-02-14 at 4.07.39 PM

Before social media, Valentine’s Day was an occasion for couples to show their love to one another via handwritten notes, chocolates, Hallmark cards and roses. Now it is an opportunity for couples to show the world how vomit-inducingly in love they are whilst reenforcing how crappy and meaningless and empty our lives are by comparison.

Mr. Throwback Wants to Swim in a Bowl of Oat Bran, Rick Moranis-Style

This week, Mr. Throwback selects an actor who permeated our childhood but disappeared without warning.

Rick Moranis first gained comedic notoriety in the early ’80s as a cast member on the renowned Canadian sketch comedy series, Second City Television (other prominent cast members included John Candy, Catherine O’Hara and Martin Short). Moranis went on to star in Hollywood comedy classics like Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Little Giants, Spaceballs and, of course, Ghostbusters.

Camp David Opens Tonight: Obama Won’t Be There, But Denise Rich Might Be

Our memories of summer camp would have been much fonder if they included shag-covered ottomans, fog machines and mini arepas. Luckily, Camp David, a cozy bar and Venezuelan tapas joint on Avenue B that opens this evening, has all of those things. It also has cocktails prepared with fresh squeezed juices, a wall of flickering Edison lightbulbs and Iberico ham smothered in melted cheese served on a stick (they call it the lollipop). Sign us up, mom!

The Purple Party Was a Colorful Scene

It would be ill advised to attend New York Fashion Week’s debauched Purple magazine party when you’re meant to be at the office at 10 a.m. the following morning. Against all my better judgment, that’s precisely what I did. This season, editor Olivier Zahm held his bash at André Saraiva’s Chez André in the basement of The Standard East Village. Save for a harrowing 5 minutes in which the sound cut out, it was yet another delightful champagne-doused evening for Zahm and his cronies.

Big Gay Ice Cream Is Serving Up Padma Lakshmi Sundaes

(Photo: Randi Eichenbaum)

Not to be outdone by Stephen Malkmus, Padma Lakshmi is also getting her very own soft-serve flavor. That’s right, Big Gay Ice Cream tweeted earlier this morning that Padma’s “rose ice cream with pistachios and rose-infused whipped cream” is coming this Valentine’s Day. The sundae is a take on a recipe in Padma’s cookbook Tangy Hot Tart & Sweet. Though Padma won’t be in-store doing any meet n’ greets, co-founder Douglas Quint suspects she’ll pop by to sample the creation. He tells us Padma even taste tested some batches last week. Did you taste test batches of your ice cream, Stephen Malkmus?

Our Ill-Fated Attempt to Get Ray Lemoine and Lindsay Lohan to Talk Girls

Craig Blankenhorn/HBO

Photo: Craig Blankenhorn/HBO

Our brilliant idea for Girls Talk this week? Get Ray Lemoine, best known for tangling with Paris Hilton’s little brother, to text about the episode with Lindsay Lohan. After all, the East Village freelancer, who now refers to that incident as a performance-art piece called “Lohan Thug,” still gets spotted with Lilo when he’s not throwing parties or getting arrested at Sundance. And who better than she to weigh in on the foibles of Hannah and her cronies?

Fly Away to Malibu With This Debut Design Duo’s Erotica Collection

14-75700003

So Saturday Spring ’86 Collection

It’s easy to be charmed by the Bushwick-based design duo behind the recently launched clothing line So Saturday. Their nicknames are Captain and Doc, they have a knack for finishing each other’s sentences and their one-of-a-kind button ups are printed with lobsters, avocados and corndogs. They surf, they skate, and they document their adventures on a Super 8 camera. They also embody an enviable blend of laid-back California cool (radical, dude) with a can-do New York attitude.

Mr. Throwback Goes Nuts For Space Jam and Has the Custom Sneakers to Prove It

This week, Mr. Throwback ate an Oreo cookie inside of another cookie and hung out with Kid Cudi. He also selected the theme song from Space Jam as his throwback pick of the week. The 1996 live-action/animated cinematic masterpiece stars Michael Jordan as Michael Jordan (it’s the part he was born to play), who in 1993 retires from basketball to attempt a career as a baseball player (which, unfortunately, actually happened).

What Happens When Brooklyn Artists Hit Bergdorf’s? A Taxidermy Chandelier

Several Brooklyn-based artists transported their signature aesthetics uptown this week, creating window displays and in-store installations for Bergdorf Goodman. Intuitively titled Ten Artists for Ten Spaces, it features the works of artists curated by Kyle DeWoody, founder of Grey Area – a company that continuously puts art in places one would least expect to find it (you’ll remember the Bic lighter ring).
