We Went Uptown For the First Time in Two Years, to Preview the Whitney Biennial

The Whitney Biennial, which opens to the public this Friday, attempts for the 77th time to offer a snapshot of contemporary art in America while simultaneously acknowledging that this is just not humanly possible – particularly in the confines of one brutal uptown structure. The Whitney brought in three external curators to take on this impossible task, giving each their own floor to fill with sculpture, paintings, video, performance, printed matter and big, plush penises (note: only one floor actually includes big plush penises).

An ‘Arabian French Bistro’ Opens On Avenue A Tonight

If the East Village didn’t already have enough restaurants which marry two seemingly disparate cultures, tonight it can add “Arabian French Bistro” Au Za’atar to the list. Located at 12th and A (in the space that previously housed Table 12), the restaurant’s menu certainly leans towards Arabian: there’s a range of traditional mezze (hummus, falafel, lamb tartare with scallion and mint) as well as grilled kebabs, various lamb dishes, and Tunisian cous cous served vegetarian or with lamb, merguez or chicken.

The East Village’s Newest Coffee Shop Slides Open Its Back Bar This Week

(Photo: Janice Yi)

The Roost is the OG hip-as-hell coffee shop of our wildest hopes and dreams: Brooklyn Roasting Company single origin beans, Balthazar pastries, fresh flowers and — come Wednesday — a monstrous speakeasy offering up to 16 lines of craft beer (naturally the coffee shop of our dreams is also a bar). It’s even got an OG East Village owner, Vito DiTomaso, who opened the original Luca Lounge on the very same block (in the space The Roost now occupies and the adjacent space) in ’97.

A New Nook For Sushi and Chicken Hearts

(Photo: Daniel Maurer)

East Villagers, if you’re searching for a new sushi standby following the closing of Sapporo East and Shima and the relocation of Sushi Lounge, newly opened Sushi Zayy might be a contender.

Taking over the space that previously housed Pudgie’s/Nathan’s/Arthur Treacher’s, the restaurant offers your regular soup/salad/sushi/sashimi/maki fare as well as a $40 omakase option. Things get interesting in the grilled chicken section, where there are copious options (thighs, hearts, neck, soft bone… pick your poison).

Tomorrow Is Your Last Chance to Drink at Barramundi As You Know It

The exterior of Barramundi as we know it

The exterior of Barramundi as we know it

Much like the fish from which it takes its name, classic LES bar Barramundi is going through some changes. “The barramundi fish goes through these mutations occasionally,” says owner Tony Powe. “It changes its sex halfway through its life – it goes from male to female.”

MIRRORS, Tim Bruniges. Installation view. At Signal in Bushwick. (Photo: Courtesy of Signal)

We can say without hyperbole that this is by far the coolest thing that will ever happen in the history of mankind.

This Sunday, experimental/weirdo/brilliant musician Sean Nicholas Savage is bringing his signature awesome weirdness to Signal gallery in Bushwick. Savage is a performance character of sorts (like Boy George, but hipper) who first rose to infamy in the illegal after hours scene in Montreal (the same scene that gave birth to Grimes).

After 20 Years in the East Village, Meg Is Getting a Meg-Over

Meg, that charming clothing store that oft has cutesy punny chalkboard signage and adorably themed discounts, has inhabited its Ninth Street location since 1994, so it was high time that it treated itself to a “Meg-over” (we warned you about the puns). But don’t fret, if you’re Mega-obsessed (lolz, we can make puns too!) with Meg’s robust collection of jumpsuits and covetable casuals, for now you can find them next door in the space that previously housed the clothing shop Sohung Designs.

For every couple of dozen unpleasant openings and closings in LES, there’s one that manages to restore our faith in the neighborhood, if only for a glorious moment. Gallery Sensei, a 2,000 sq. ft. gallery and arts event space at 278 Grand Street, is one such opening. The permanent outpost of the art project of the same name, Sensei promises exhibitions, art events and even booze! Yes, there’s a charming bar in the back of the space ideal for discussing the works on view or how much your rent has gone up this month.
