What You Missed at Hanksy’s Surprise Art Show, ‘Market Surplus’

If you didn’t catch it this weekend, you sadly missed your chance to visit “Market Surplus,” the limited-edition LES popup street art show that opened Friday evening and closed last night. The show, organized by LES provocateur Hanksy, featured work from ten street artists who had less than a week to fill an abandoned market hall with murals. The show’s “gallery” — slated for conversion to senior housing as part of the massive Essex Crossing development — will soon be demolished.
But despair not: we’ve rounded up the best Instagram photos from the show.

Forget Banksy, The Katz’s Pop-Up Has Hanksy… and Kenzo Minami
A while back, we clued you into the pop-up that Katz’s Delicatessen was opening next to its longtime digs. The Space, at 203 East Houston, launches with a party at 7 p.m. tomorrow, and it turns out the deli’s taste in artists is as sharp as its pastrami blades. No, they didn’t get Banksy (he was busy hitting the Upper West Side, Staten Island and Chelsea over the weekend) but on board for the collab are self-declared “fartist” Hanksy, Baron Von Fancy (maker of the “Blow Me” balloon), Rich Tu, and Kenzo Minami.

After 79 Years, Essex Street Market Has Left the Building
With a champagne toast yesterday, the vendors of Essex Street Market said goodbye to their longtime home at 120 Essex Street ahead of its relocation across the street. Opened in 1940 in an effort to remove pushcarts from the street, the market continued to provide an affordable, diverse variety of food to its Lower East Side neighbors and beyond. More →
Trash Can PSA Tells Trumpers Where They Can Go

Talk about trashing your opponent.
Someone plastered this fake sanitation department PSA on a garbage bin at East 9th Street and Avenue A. (DSNY has confirmed their logo was used without permission.) Where there’d otherwise be a “LET’S MAKE NYC CLEAN AND RAT FREE” poster, there’s now this image of a Trump supporter who clearly doesn’t mind Chick-fil-A’s “creepy infiltration of New York City.” We reached out to Hanksy, of “Dump Trump” fame, but he said this one wasn’t his. If anyone knows who’s responsible, get in touch.
Update, 5:30pm: Looks like this is the work of Winston Tseng, the graphic designer and art director who previously gained attention with his Trump alphabet cards as well as fake ads for Hannity and a Yeezy x MAGA 2020 collab. Earlier this year he received a cease and desist after putting up a “Your Train Is Delayed” poster in the Bleecker Street subway station. Around the time this post was published, he Instagrammed three photos of “Keep NYC Trash Free” posters at other locations.

Forget It, Jake, It’s Metrograph’s ‘Imagining Chinatown’ Series
After paying tribute to Fire Island, Metrograph is looking a little closer to home with its newly announced series, “Imagining Chinatown.” The series, opening Sept. 27, aims to show how Hollywood has depicted Chinatown as a “hyperbolic fantasy space,” where one “partakes in copious amounts of opium” and “crime and sin are believed to go unpunished,” per a press release.
