Organic delis sprout up in Williamsburg faster than you can say “natural-organic-vegan-gluten-free” but which of them offers the sweetest variety of kale chips? That’s really the mark of a great post-yoga/pre-Pilates deli, isn’t it? We slipped into our vegan Toms and stepped inside two of Williamsburg’s newest to see which one had the killer kale section.

IMG_9375This modest spot opened on the corner of Powers and Union about a month ago, not far from the new Juicery + Kitchen at 568 Union Avenue. The exterior signage doesn’t exactly inspire confidence (since when are Pepsi, Frosted Flakes and Pringles gourmet or organic?) but step inside and you’ll find the snap-pea crisps and lentil chips you’re looking for (though not all that much else in the healthy realm). As for kale chips, they have a variety of “raw vegan” flavors by New York Naturals, including Vegan “Cheese,” Bombay Ranch, and Spicy Miso. Plus less exotic kale chips from Rhythm Superfoods.
Rating: 1 out of 4 kale chips. Kale FAIL!

IMG_9356This place opened at 205 North Ninth (aka “The Driggs”) a couple of months ago. It modestly calls itself a planet but it actually offers an entire universe of kale chips to the luxury apartment dwellers above. There are six shelves of Brad’s Raw Foods organic, gluten-free kale chips in flavors like Nacho, Nasty Hot, Smokin Chipotle and so on. Next to that are stacks of Ed’s of Maine gluten-free kale chips in flavors like Cheezy Pizza, Nacho Cheese, White Cheddar, and Sour Cream & Onion. Then you’ve got your New York Naturals kale chips, your Luke’s Organic kale chips, your SuperEats kale chips, and your Rhythm Superfoods kale chips. They’ve got you covered (in kale chip crumbs)!
Rating: 4 out of 4 kale chips. The green giant!

Join us next week, or whenever the next organic deli opens in Williamsburg, to see who’ll unseat the reigning kale-chip champ.
