Until now, culinary options at Jones Beach were mostly limited to that one food court that we used mostly for the bathrooms, but that’s about to change: ever-expanding Smorgasburg is bringing a semi-tented beer garden to the beach’s Central Mall, near the main entrance. They’re calling it SmorgasBar: Brooklyn by the Beach.

Now, in addition to the shuffleboard courts — which, before Royal Palms opened, were always the reason to choose Jones Beach over rockin’ Rockaway — there’ll be a “sand play” area with badminton, bocce, and ping-pong.

Alongside a shipping-container bar featuring Long Island breweries and a Friday-Sunday raw bar by Brooklyn Oyster Party, there’ll be four vendors open from Memorial Day to Labor Day: Handsome Hank’s Fish Hut (fish & chips, clams, shrimp), Home Frite (Belgian-style fries and sausage), Nolita pizza spot Rubirosa, and South Williamsburg juice and taco shop Summers. Vendors will rotate at two additional booths, starting with El Gato Nacho and Fleisher’s.

So, yeah, forget about waiting till August’s Mötley Crüe show to hit Jones Beach this year…
